A big box of Babel Research (updated!)

   Posted by: thebruce

(updates appended below; most recent update: Sep.25.10 – Please see disclaimers at the end of the article before commenting)

Today, big things happened. The Box was opened. (ongoing updates appended)

The viral nature of this production certainly did its job. The original video on youtube had a description which was consistently updated every few days. But the description was a countdown. It now reads:

So what happened? We still don’t know… but something. All content indicates that events are taking (have taken?) place in the year 2018, August 6th. Supposedly this is when the events of the video take/took place.

Read on to find out all that’s been discovered, and dig in to the story…

A key point to remember: As with the initial ads spotted in various places for “What’s in the box?”, there are many, many references to J.J. Abrams’ Lost universe, and the ARGs used to promote the tv series. At this point, there’s no connection that this officially has anything to do with Lost or its promotional campaigns. So the following outline only focuses on WITB-related content.

Visit http://whatsinthebox.nl

Hover over the ring and you see the following hex quickly display:

00FFCF FF00D0 8E01FF DAFF00 FF0101 01D4FF 000BFF 42FF00

Now click on the upper quadrant of the ring, and you’ll be forwarded to a high quality presentation of the original video. (note that the “character audio track” is no longer missing as it was in the original viral video)

Click on the lower quadrant of the ring, and an input box appears. Various keywords will provide responses, but of most interest is:

  • help which then displays “high contrast

Others keywords include:

  • (anything incorrect) “uh uh uh, you didn’t say the magic word
  • please = who are you, Dennis Nedry?” (a reference to the character from Jurassic Park who secured his computer with the message above, and ‘please’ wasn’t the answer)
  • whatsinthebox = “soon the world will find out
  • thebox = “what’s in it
  • tenacious dsimply the greatest band on earth
  • babelwhy are you giving me the directions, if you are the one who needs them
  • babelresearchbabel re-search
  • saganoevilsagasliveon
  • hanso4 8 15 16 23 42
  • 4 8 15 16 23 42SYSTEM FAILURE
  • pandoraCopay Pales” (apocalypse?)
  • date06-08-2018

What's in the box?Given the help response, boost contrast, capture the full page image of the ring and boost the contrast, and you see the text appear in the lower left:

Now view the source of the WITB page, and you’ll find commented HTML with the text: /snd/jables.mp3 (listen)

In reverse, this becomes a voice saying:

local protection team report back

Also in the source is an HTML comment at the very end containing:

This is a palidrome (like “Tim Smit”, reads the same forwards and backwards)

Finally, also visible in the sourse:

some things will only be revealed through mirrors and light
Unmask the URL

Visit Babel Research

Now view the source of the website, and you’ll find commented HTML with the text:

/snd/hidden.mp3 (listen)

In reverse, this becomes a voice saying:

yankee november

Also in the source, a number of coloured dot images are labeled with hex colour values. Scattered throughout the page HTML are “key” attributes with the same hex values.

Locate these “key” attributes in the correct order:

00ffcf ff00d0 8e01ff daff00 ff0101 01d4ff 000bff 42ff00 fea702

Now click on the dots in the same order:

5 1 2 7 9 4 3 6 8

When done, this image (army_evac.jpg) appears:

What's in the box? army_evac.jpg

Visit the ABOUT page, then view the source and you’ll find commented HTML with the text:

/snd/ragekage.mp3 (listen)

In reverse, this becomes a voice saying:

we have a 14-juno situation

If you recall in the video, a number is entered into the first cell phone, the Samsung A500. In the login entry field at the top right of Babel Research, enter the number:

The page refreshes an this message appears:

As of 6th of august all remote systemchecks have come to a halt. Please contact local authorities or use remote any remote accesspoint.

What's in the box? schrodinger's catWatch closely at the bottom of the website, to the left of the corporate logos. Occasionally, a small image of the schrodinger cat will appear.

When it appears, click it quickly, and you can download the audio file discedoMalum.mp3

In reverse, this becomes a voice saying:

found. project attainable has failed

There’s another clickable object, found in the source, labeled “little secret”. In Firefox, this object is located just to the right of center below the page header (eg, between the “Y” of “Research and Technology” and the “e” of “achieving the impossible” on the BSC page). This method doesn’t work in IE. You can download the audio file uec.mp3

This is a male voice which says:

What’s in the box?

Return to whatsinthebox.nl and open the input box, then enter operation2347 and you’ll be forwarded to a new location…

United European Corps

Once on this site, view the source, and you’ll find commented HTML with the text:

/snd/mc2.mp3 (listen)

In reverse, this becomes a voice saying:

located within quarantine zone

This clip is also revealed in the high quality video stream page source.

The image displayed in the center of this page is located here:

United European Corps

The U.E.C. has open positions, and is allowing people to join!
Join Now” the flyer says, “and find out what’s in the box!” Note: The European Union flag itself has 12 stars. The central circle in this ad contains 13 stars.

We still don’t know what’s in the box.

Available positions:

  • Medical Officer
  • Signal Specialist
  • Infantry Runner
  • System Expert

But if you’d like to join the U.E.C., stay tuned. Certainly the “how” will come to light very shortly. Peace Through Power!

Of course, don’t forget the fine print:

UEC is always looking for volunteers in their campaign for peace.

Come and join the discussion over at Unfiction! Or take this mystery to another community you frequent. Hopefully soon the world will in fact find out what on earth is in the box!

More discoveries… Much like anti.gif located on whatsinthebox.nl, there is also an anti.jpg located on bable-research.eu:

What's in the box? anti.jpg

This image contains a number of formulas and scans from textbooks. In the header is the Hilbert Matrix. I’ve attempted to separate some of the overlays for easier visualization:

What's in the box? Overlay1What's in the box? Overlay2What's in the box? Overlay3What's in the box? Anti-clipWhat's in the box? Anti-remainder. Note some leftover illegible text

Also missed in the outline above, when viewing the Whatsinthebox ring:

Clicking the left quadrant of the ring displays a video of a “TST” news broadcast taking place during the primary event from the ‘test reel’. A number of audio languages are overlaid, but there is certainly much to take in.

About two thirds through the broadcast, a single frame flashes containing the UEC logo:

What's in the box? TST News

At the end of the news broadcast there is a segment of reversed audio.

62-long. / Primary object not f–

Clicking the right quadrant of the ring scatters a number of newspaper clippings around the ring.

What's in the box? Newspaper clippings

Some of the heading letters are clickable, removing the articles, but leaving only the letters that would spell:

Visit babel-research.eu/witb/exposed and you’ll be presented with another, very faint, image. Adjusted, it appears to be a an overlaid eye on the Babel Research website.

What's in the box? Exposed

The notification image (warning.jpg) on Babel-Research.eu also contains a cryptic hidden message. The adjusted image reveals another mathematical formula – Planck Time.

What's in the box? Warning!

The header image (title_nar.jpg) from the website also contains a hint to try checking for the ‘anti‘ image:

What's in the box? Babel Research header

The Army_evac popup image flyer noted above also contains a hidden message.

What's in the box? SAGA

Headway has been made with the “+HS PQY-4FLI” string back at the main site. The hidden HTML clue: “some things will only be revealed through mirrors and light” indicates how to find the string, and what to do with it. Place a mirror along the center line (or just photoshop it) and you find this:

What's in the box? Hell.

Now visit the Babel Research site and enter “hell” in the login field, and you can download the audio file X.mp3 (listen)

The request for the audio file is actually a javascript redirect, which includes the comment:

In reverse, this becomes a few voices saying:

Brout has been secured. / Roger that. / Tango

“Brout” is referenced in the original video at approx. 4:18, once the 59462 code is entered in the cell phone: “The Brout”, “The Higgs”, and “The Englert”. Another key reference is the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism (wikipedia).

It appears the audio clips can be placed together sequentially. I’ve speculated a possible order of clips, listed below.

[News // discedoMalum // X // hidden // mc2 // ragekage // jables]

(female) …62 long.
(dig.male) Primary object not f//ound. Project Attainable has failed. // Brout has been secured.
(sqawk) Roger that.
(dig.fem) Tango // Yankee November located within quarantine zone. // We have a 14-Juno situation. // Local protection team report back.

The header bar located at babel-research.eu/images/bar.gif contains the same text that scrolls through the CBI marquee in the original video. Points to note:

Analyzing the army_evac.jpg image for more information, you’ll see in the upper right corner a small bar code. It matches the pattern of a U.P.C. code.

What's in the box? Army_evac bar code

The numbers contained within the guard bars (double lines at the beginning, middle, and end) are

125002 741350

The UPC standard though states the last digit as a checkdigit. With these numbers, the check digit should be “2″, not “0″. Are the numbers important?
(for reference, the checkdigit is calculated, using the first 11 numbers: sum of odd positioned digits multiplied by 3, plus sum of even positioned digits; the remainder after dividing by 10, subtracted from 10 if more than 0. Thus, 10-(((1+5+0+7+1+5)*3+2+0+2+4+3+0) mod 10) = 2)

A new video has appeared from timsmit, entitled “Cars (Second hidden)”, 01.15.10 14:47 (apparently first posted at boxblip.blip.tv, but available on babel-research.eu).

If you look closely at the very end of the film, you will notice below the flaming ring the letters “MMX”. Its meaning is uncertain, however MMX is the roman numerical value for 2010.

A “new” (as of January 15) video by Timacious has been posted to youtube, call “Hey Girl” from Daybroke. While very abstract (and a catchy song), it specifically contains something relevant to WITB. At about 3:28, you will spot the brief appearance of a code that appears related to Babel Research.

Does this imply there are three words to look for that will lead to a hidden web page? Only time will tell.

Edited to add: The other recent video noted in the previous update “Cars” can be viewed on Babel-Research at http://babel-research.eu/129/222/315.html – might this be the URL being referenced in the music video? That would imply that the three ‘words’ are “129″, “222″, and “315″. It may be that the music video was the intended direction from which to lead people to the Cars video (which does bear an eerie similarity to the music video).

Also located in the source code for the Cars video web page following the 7 pipes (“|”) is the following comment:

The wait is not yet over

Daybroke - Hey Girl, by Timacious

More info:

It is referring to the Cars video. I’ve taken screenshots of recurring elements in the music video, which is clearly instructions for producing the URL to the Cars video.

1) At 1:43 – 1:44, the WITB “?” appears with the timecode below WITB at 1:43
WITB at 1:44
2) At 1:29, the WITB symbol appears with 1/3 and ??:?? where the timecode appeared as above WITB, Code 1/3
3) At 2:22, the WITB symbol appears with 2/3 and ??:?? where the timecode appeared as above WITB, Code 2/3
4) At 3:15, the WITB symbol appears with 3/3 and ??:?? where the timecode appeared as above WITB, Code 3/3

Based on the hint at 1:43-1:44, code 1 = 129, code 2 = 222, code 3 = 315, and that produces the final URL babel-research.eu/129/222/315.html which is the location of “Cars”.

MovieViral.com managed to get an exclusive comment from Tim Smit regarding the continued production of this film as a feature. Tim had this to say:

“I can only say we are in full gear making this into a feature! Although the wait is not yet over!”

On July 31, timacious commented in his own channel with the following message:

“There is much more to come. Things have been crazy. S.t.a.y. T.u.n.e.d.”

Speculation is that something new may happen on the (now infamous) August 6th date, the anniversary of the events from the first video which took place August 6th, 2018.

All we can say is - S.t.a.y. T.u.n.e.d.

On September 24, timsmit uploaded a new Daybroke music video entitled “Sabotage”. As expected, the music video contains a number of hidden easter eggs, though as of this writing nothing that advances the “WITB” mystery.  Watch the video below:

Some hidden easter eggs…

1) At 0:42, the Drink box is labeled “Babel Products”, “110% sugar daddy”
2) At 1:10, the posted on the truck door reads “Truck No. 108″
3) At 1:14, the car’s license plate reads “THE D”
4) At 1:17-1:19, the windows contain letters that read “GOD” from inside. There’s also two green signs labeled C1 and C2 (unsure if they’re relevant however)
5) At 1:19, a TV inside the building is playing the boxblip “Cars” video previously discovered.
6) At 1:52, a guy is wearing a Tenacious D t-shirt
7) At 2:26, two trucks collide, one belonging to Babel Products, transporting Cola. (the blue truck looks like it’s labeled “Mintos”)
8) At 2:30, the hazard sign clearly reads, with the UEC logo:

UEC Missile Site
Under direct authority of [signature?]
[last line illegible]

Comments below are moderated, to help sort signal from noise. Below are the guidelines to keep in mind if you wish to comment (and please do!).

1. To re-iterate (because this is such an enormously popular direction of investigation) – this article won’t be covering anything that’s contained in the old, completed Lost ARG, and that includes anything surrounding Hanso Foundation or Rachel Blake. There are references from WITB to Lost and Hanso – but exploring those leads will only take you to that ARG.

2. Babel-Research.com won’t be included here either, until there is an official, undeniable connection – not speculation, since the site blatantly says it’s not related to whatsinthebox.nl.

3. Regarding the Halflife/Portal connection – any info not connected back in some way to this project is also irrelevant here. It’s obvious that both Lost and Halflife have influence in this production, but let’s focus on what’s directly applicable to these events, in this universe. Consider those connections ‘easter egg’ until/unless it plays a role in this production.

TO CLARIFY: Yes, there is no debate – there are clearly many purposeful references and allusions to the Valve’s Halflife and Abrams’ Lost universes – but they are not officially connected. This was an independent creation. Discussing those universes’ influence on this production is ok, but I’ll moderate comments that continuously push this as advertising for some upcoming Halflife or Lost (or crossover) production – as long as there is no confirmed, official connection.

April 7th, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Well this article is covering today’s updates.
anti.gif – see resources from the previous article for analysis and discussion :)

thebox.png – I’ve never seen that before. Feel free to explain it!

April 7th, 2009 at 12:35 pm

thebox.png is a result of inverting the colours and changing the contrast of http://www.babel-research.eu/witb/exposed/

April 7th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

where did you find thebox.png
if think http://www.babel-research.eu/anti.jpg and thebox.png may have something to do with each other

You know that “copay pales” is an anagram of “Apocalypse”, I assume – it seems strange to list all of the date entries you can put in, and the responses, without drawing attention to that, I think.

But hey, what do I know?? :D

I feel like +HS PQY-4FLI should be mirrored to make an URL… shall look like 17th-???.sh can’t get the last 3 letters right…

April 7th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

babel-research.com isn’t a part of this. They even say it on their front page:

We do not know what is in the box. The Babel Research mentioned in ARG and a 2007 movie is not us.

Please do not try to hack their web-based mail system.

April 7th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

if place two files: exposed and anti.jpg in separate layers in Photoshop and make their designs match (with rotation) then we can see the phrase: ‘The state of being achievable’ what is the definition of word ‘attainableness’. Could this lead somewhere?..

April 7th, 2009 at 5:46 pm

news video has reversed audio text in the end

April 7th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

You are doing an excellent job, friend. I just wanted to post this:
It’s a lower-quality version of the same video, but uploaded by and tagged by “SOLARPLEX STUDIOS.”

It’s _probably_ just someone uploading the video for themselves in an effort to get a few hits, but I figure no stone unturned, eh?

April 7th, 2009 at 8:44 pm

Found this whilst posting the same topic on my blog. Great work on the deciphering of What is in the box!
Nice site as well.

April 8th, 2009 at 2:50 am

In the http://babel-research.eu/images/bar.gif
there is a line :aex +0.7 nasdaq -1.00.
Its pattern is wvery similar to the +hs pqy -4fli line written on the witb site. Nasdaq and AEX are stock exchanges

April 8th, 2009 at 5:03 am

Has anyone else noticed that the other two logos are of Black Mesa, and Aperture Science? And in the text of the babel research website it refers to “The Benefactors” just as the same as in the Half Life universe?
I wonder what the connection is, if there is one

April 8th, 2009 at 6:00 am

Can’t take credit for the picture here, but someone just posted a pretty good mirror of the “+HS PQY-4FLI” picture on unforum.net which looks spot on to be:

Box = Hell.

The rollover on the login box on the babel-research.eu says “Box = ????”.
Typing hell into the login box gives you a download of X.mp3.

It’s another backwards one (and I can’t unbackwards it at work. ) sounds like there are 3 distinct voices. One sounds similar to the Combine voices used on the original vid.

April 8th, 2009 at 6:46 am

April 8th, 2009 at 7:03 am

Playing the audio in the newsfeed backwords says two things. The first I can’t understand, but it sounds like ”62 long”

However the second voice says ”Primary object not f-” and cuts out.

Very strange indeed. I’m intrigued by this…

April 8th, 2009 at 7:06 am

As it is told on a site of “Babel Research”: “Box =****?”. Having reflected from top to down a phrase wikibruce.com/uploads/2009/04/highcontrast-120×89.jpg in a site whatsinthebox.nl We will receive http://kmfmd.narod.ru/img/box.jpg Now we enter Hell as a login and we receive new sound

Does anyone know that this is connected to the popular games ‘Half life’ and ‘Portal’ because on the Babel website down the bottom you have the ‘Black Mesa’ and ‘Aperture Science’ Logos.

April 8th, 2009 at 7:33 am

by using mirror. So just enter HELL into login box on http://babel-research.eu/ and then click Login. you will get a X.mp3.

April 8th, 2009 at 8:56 am

The “Thank you.” you have question marked is more likely to be “Ninety.” which makes that phrase “Tango Ninety November” or T9N.

April 8th, 2009 at 9:50 am

I’ve added a possible order of audio clips – they seem to make a sequential audio transmission. Not quite sold on the order yet, but some are certain, with breaks within words or sentences.

And I’m not yet sold on the ‘thankyou’ word not having an “ank” sound in it. To me, the “a” is very clear in its sound. A digital voice wouldn’t muddle that sound with something as different as “ine” or a long “e”, for example… bah.

April 8th, 2009 at 9:50 am

Just making sure that you know J-17 is the dharma truce breaking code

I know your not posting anything lost related, but it could be interprated differently, like a truce was broken within this ARG

April 8th, 2009 at 10:57 am

Where is J-17 mentioned? There’s a “14-Juno” (Juneau?)

April 8th, 2009 at 11:10 am

What is the sence of the Plank time Formula?

Jack Hill

I have proof now, i just noticed after watching the video again, when he is in the dark, you can see text as the bottom when he has the glasses on, it says something like ‘Biggest Collapse Since Black Mesa’ i was litrally like ‘WTF!’ when i saw it.

April 8th, 2009 at 12:14 pm

again, that’s just a reference to the same universe. ie, following that to other locations exploring the halflife mythology is beyond the scope of this article. Here, the video reers to Black Mesa. It refers to quite a number of other Lost/HL content. I mean actual WITB content being directly affected by external references. Consider it ‘fan fiction’, using existing content to enhance the story. It doesn’t mean Half-life is officially connected or Valve is endorsing this project. Right now at least.

it actually is “Hundreds found in poor conditions during kennel raid”

April 8th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

The stock values seem to be way off, though. Dow closed 350 points lower that day: http://dowjonesclose.com/

April 8th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

have you noticed that from the anti and exposed you can make up the phrase “the state of being achievable” with “achievable” crossed out in the anti.jpg

does this has to do something with attainable in the original website and project attainable from the recordings?

April 8th, 2009 at 2:29 pm

IGN: “PC: We’ve got the high resolution version of the amazing fan-made movie.”

Apparently, IGN has a high resolution version of the movie, smoother than the one on http://whatsinthebox.nl. It looks very sharp, if not cleaner than the http://whatsinthebox.nl one.

So, the creator of this gave IGN a copy of the movie and IGN is titling it ”
Half-Life 2: What’s in the Box?”. Despite the obvious HL2 reference and HL2 logo on IGN, perhaps this viral box stuff may be even bigger in the coming months.

April 8th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

The link to IGN’s video is:

April 8th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Niox, unless there’s a download link I’m not seeing, that video on IGN is at best the resolution of the high quality video on whatinthebox.nl. Better than youtube, for sure. But it doesn’t look higher resolution. Is there a different version for Insiders?

April 8th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

I noticed that in the video, when the protagonist forcibly opens the bus doors, there is a yellow graphic that briefly appears on the glass of the right door. It says “Your driver is:” with a picture of the driver. Under the picture, there is an ID: “7-234 A”.

I thought that number bears a resemblance to the “2347″ in the “operation2347″ audio clip.

April 8th, 2009 at 5:22 pm

I think that this is going to spend my weekend… i’m in process of making a complete theory of what’s in the box

I know how to achieve operation2347 you have to go to http://babel-research.eu/?about=research_bsp

click near word “impossible”, about 1mm away from “e” . to achieve this you have to combine site and exposed.jpg and the arrow will show the the direction

April 9th, 2009 at 4:06 am

You know that there is a HD-Video of this ?
Its 850mb large and if those IGN peoples uploaded it with less compression, it’s likely for them to have “a better quality”

April 9th, 2009 at 6:42 am

In the IRC channel, iFaux made an interesting discovery :

Those two files aren’t used in any html pages, so maybe there are still some files there we haven’t found yet…

It is viral marketing for a movie set in the Half-Life universe based on the seven hour war.

April 9th, 2009 at 8:38 am

So I did a little research and looked up the WHOIS information on both websites…

whatsinthebox.nl is registered to Tim Smit

babel-research.eu is registered to an “undisclosed owner”, with “timaciousd@gmail.com” as the contact e-mail.

In the WITB site , in the newspaper section, in the paperpiece with the circle it’s written “nachtmer” .Possibly , it’s a part of “nachtmerrie” , nightmare in nederland.

Can the barcode on army evacuation procedure have some meaning?

April 9th, 2009 at 9:49 am

April 9th, 2009 at 9:56 am

Its certainly possible. If anyone has an old CueCat or some other bar code reader you could give it a scan. This same sign is seen in the movie.

I also noticed something else. In the Newscast. The first one with the 10m lead-core walls was filmed at 1:11 local time. The second clip was filmed before hand, at 1:04 local time. This means the first clip was filmed after the second clip. A quick research reveled that this was during Daylight Savings Time. (-1 GMT) This is consistent as DST in Netherlands runs from March to October. While this may be irreverent it is something to consider.

April 9th, 2009 at 10:13 am

I found “9137017221126″ and no real product match, owing to this site http://fr.barcodepedia.com

A member on our blog found “125002141350″ with a real barcode reader (also no real product match) but he says that barcode reader could have specific configuration according to each store (he works in an Apple one ^^).

I just watched the new vid from IGN all the way through. My thoughts:

It’s got new sounds to it, and some new effects. Not much has changed about the video itself.

It has a ‘character track’ which means you can hear the guy pant as he’s being attacked.

It opens differently, and it’s still labeled as a test film.

It’s still labeled Half-Life: is this IGN mistaking the video, or labeling it as it’s told?

April 9th, 2009 at 12:37 pm

to lion:

barcodes are always store based, for instance, your apple products won’t scan in your supermarket, however, every barcode has a landcode

About Joris PK’s post above:
It’s not easy to know where to click, so here is an image of the ‘Research and Technology’ site, overlaid with exposed.jpg and anti.jpg. the point to click is roughly where the cursor is: the intersection of the red lines from the arrows. Also notice that the ‘B’ from anti.jpg is perfectly centered in the exposed circle.

(Mac users who want to try this are advised to use Afloat – google it)

As you probably already know the movie was shot in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, the city where Tim Smit is also based.
Now the picture of the research facility on the Babel Industries website is in fact a picture of an existing power station in Nijmegen. It is a bit modified though but it’s certainly the same building.

Just for your information.

April 9th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Tried searching around on the manufacturer code “25002″, found nothing. Also tried searching for the whole code here “http://www.upcdatabase.com/itemform.asp”, nothing there either.

April 9th, 2009 at 10:07 pm

If you watch another film made by Tim Smit: The Phone Book Myth (via youtube) you’ll see another flickering box with question mark on 3:53 minutes. You’ll see the same at the end of the video. Not that it adds anything but it at least shows how big this viral is.

I checked the Barcode with my phone (Upcode Bat code reader)

Funny how the results conflict like this.

He is basically saying that if there is enough comotion about it and people really want a big movie of it wich will be 90 minutes,
he will continue. Also about the 150 euro and the conversation in the train with the hollywood guys. But i think Thibaut Niels is to be investegated more.

April 11th, 2009 at 2:40 am

The army_evac barcode is really incorrect, but if you go to http://trakstuff.com/help_center/article/2 and click the sample barcode link you will get the full image of the barcode (http://www.zrox.net/Personal/images/barcode.png). I dont think that the last digit is meant to be 2 instead of 0.

April 11th, 2009 at 4:36 am

the whole thing, has to do something with the playstation 3.just look at the red ring, same as on playstation.com.maybe a half life exlusive on the ps3???

April 12th, 2009 at 1:14 am

the red ring of death oO

April 12th, 2009 at 5:40 am

IF you look on the Babel research site the page with all the heads of each division. Their names spell something. Take each letter before the period and organize them into “The Fall”.

April 12th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I really dont think it is a PS3 Exclusive for a few reasons:

A) Sony would already be flaunting this exclusive around becuase they need to boost PS3 Sales even after killzone 2.

B) Orange Box was not Exclusive to XB360 so why would what ever this be exclusive to PS3. VAVLe allyways is true to PC gamers. They get it first.

C) VALVe is up to their neck in L4D updates (rolling out at the end of this month) HL2: EP3.

April 13th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Curious, has anyone tried scanning the barcode backwards? I’m in no way any kind of expert in barcodes and if there is any ‘sure tells’ if the barcode is reading in the right direction, but from what you all have discovered so far is that many things need to be manipulated. Why not this one?

April 13th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

A note on the “exposed” image… I don’t think anyone has brought this up.., but dont you guys see a boat on top of that image? With the parts of the header of the site?

“magic word“

Magic words in technology

Software like MediaWiki uses “magic words” to make system information available to templates and editors, such as {{CURRENTTIME}}, which displays the server time: 10:31, see Help:Magic words.

Hexadecimal “words” used in byte code to identify a specific file or data format are known as magic numbers.

no he probado con todas. pero, cren ke tengan algo que ver?

The term magic word may also refer to the word please when used by adults to teach children manners:

“Gimme ketchup!”
“What’s the magic word?”
“Sorry. May I have some ketchup, please?”

please = ”who are you, Dennis Nedry?”

For hakero… hmm NO For bessenyei… how you get this? Lol its fantastic :P

April 15th, 2009 at 7:11 am

Found this artical on Wikipedia. Dennis Nedry was the Computer networker in Jurassic Park. He ended up steeling embryos from the park for payment. Sound familiar. Perhaps we have some clues in the movie.

Dennis Nedry

Dennis Nedry was an obese computer networker. Nedry worked for John Hammond and was in charge of networking Jurassic Park’s computers. In the novel, Nedry doesn’t know what InGen does: he was ordered to program without many details, and was called to the island to fix numerous bugs. However, Hammond refused to pay him any extra money for his work. Eventually Lewis Dodgson of Biosyn offered Nedry $1.5 million to steal embryos from Jurassic Park’s labs (coincidentally, in the novel, Henry Wu later reveals that the embryos Nedry steals are worth at the very least 2 million). In order to do this – and make a swift escape from the visitor center – Nedry had to shut down the park’s security systems, including the electric fences surrounding the dinosaur paddocks. Without power, the fences go out, and the creatures escape. His death in the novel is far more graphic than in the film adaptation, as Nedry’s stomach is slashed open and his corpse is eaten by a dilophosaurus. Just before he dies, he drops the shaving cream can that contains the frozen embryos. What results from this is never explained in the series, although it is possible that it may resurface as a major plot point in the fourth installment, after scripts surfaced for a fourth Jurassic Park film involved this (although Dodgson mentioned in the first movie that there was only enough coolant in the can to last 36 hours). Also, in the novel, a procompsognathus ate his nose after he was already dead. In the Universal Studios ride, The Jurassic Park River Adventure, you will see the shaving cream can that had the dinosaur DNA, but Dennis Nedry is nowhere to be found.

Wayne Knight played the role of Nedry in the film adaptation.

“Nedry” is possibly an anagram of “Nerdy”.

Just dragging Unfiction discoveries over here.

-It seems timsmit likes his extreme science, the beginning of the whatsinthebox video seems to be filmed on campus in this NanoLab

This explains all the refrences to the intense science that whatsinthebox is connected to.

About: babel-research.eu/witb/exposed

Considering the theme of Babel Research having towers as their logo, and the tower where the singularity occurs, I’d suggest that this is in fact not an eye, but a map around a circular construction, with roads leading to and from it.

This also helps explain what the arrow would mean – an indication of an entrance point, or some other property of that route, perhaps?

April 17th, 2009 at 6:26 am

If I had the time and the brains to think of all these things…Awesome work!

I think they’re planning something much, MUCH bigger than this film. They’re hiding something. If its just a small movie, why they have createdd so many sites, codes and riddles Strange…

April 18th, 2009 at 4:13 am

Hey guys,

looking at anti.css and pro.css, in Anti.css there’s a reference to “Paine”, so I googled “what’s in the box paine” and an extract from “Dune” (the book and movie) came up, where a character asks a guy to put his hand in a box, and he asks:

“What’s in the box?”

and then she says “Pain.”

at the end of the scene, she also finishes saying:

“Can’t go around maiming potential humans. There’re those who’d give a pretty for the secret of this box, though.”

Might be completely irrelevant, but also might be giving us a clue about looking for the secret of the box.. maybe.. we’ll never find it.. and maybe it’s only the pain of having spent all this time to find it that remains..

Maybe I’m completely wrong. But just my $0.02 !

April 18th, 2009 at 10:46 am

A common nickname for area 51 is the box.

April 18th, 2009 at 7:52 pm

In the Exposed-picture, between the lines below the Babel-logo.
These squares and lines look like they could be letters if one adds the missing squares.
Anyone tried this or is it just my twisted imagination?

April 20th, 2009 at 9:17 am

An additional bit of trivia. The movie referred to the towers building a singularity being initiated. The singularity is what is referred to as the potential mass within a black hole after a massive star collapse. I say potential because this is theory. However the theory continues to say that mass, if compressed tight enough, will have the potential to prevent light from escaping.

Additionally, another theory states that black holes are created in our atmosphere all the time. The new Hadron Collider is supposed to test this theory.

The raises the question to the towers, where they say they are grabbing energy from the air according to Babel Industries web site.

April 20th, 2009 at 10:43 am

It’s J.J Abrams. He’s directing the HL movie. Game set and match.

April 20th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

I think we’ll just have to wait this out just like with Cloverfield. There were so many links and “connections” to other sites such as Ethan Haas when it turned out that there was absolutely NO connection. I think that’s what’s going on here. There are links that take you absolutely nowhere except to more links which still keep you guessing. The maker of the video has talked about a film and we’ll just have to wait.

April 22nd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

I just want to point out, that the big gold domed building in the news feed on whatsinthebox.nl, is the Georgia State Capitol building in Atlanta, GA, USA… that is extremely random, and i only live about a mile away from it. also, you can look on google maps at it and see the interstate behind the capitol. do you think that this has any connection?

April 23rd, 2009 at 12:30 am

So here’s something interesting, if not entirely helpful.

One of the tricks that was used on the Halo 2 “ilovebees” ARG was to hide text in the coding of the image files. To read it, you’d download the image and rename it as a .txt file. I tried doing that to some of the images at Babel Research. There’s no hidden text, but there are Adobe Photoshop timestamps. All of the graphics on the Babel website are timestamped at various hours throughout the day of April 5th, 2009.

However, I also tried this on the red “?” box ( http://www.whatsinthebox.nl/riseofthedirtnappers/02fe8bf0.jpg ) at the bottom of Rise of the Dirtnappers poster page, and it’s timestamped October 21st, 2007. Evidently, this project has been a long time in the making.

April 23rd, 2009 at 3:28 am

No one seems to have mentioned the religious significance of Babel, its logo is all about the towers and in the bible wasn’t the tower of babel a tower that they tried to build up to the level of god but crashed down destroying everything? Maybe I’m just stating the obvious.

April 23rd, 2009 at 7:30 pm

http://www.babel-research.eu/witb/stream has been updated. A disclaimer is added below the movie.

I downloaded and edited the disclaimer (contrast, etc.), and it came with the folowing text: “It’s just a non commercial test!”.

After all I think it has nothing to do with half life, or any other organisation. It’s just his personal project!

I added the edited image on the folowing website with my nickname goldfoxx:
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?mode=attach&id=17959. It is at page 86 of the topic.

April 24th, 2009 at 1:21 am

Why does clicking the image at http://www.whatsinthebox.nl/riseofthedirtnappers/ take you to a fake planet terror video? ( http://www.planetterror.nl/faketrailer/trailer.php?id=66 )

April 24th, 2009 at 6:48 am

I just found out that the subpages are located in the content directory. So http://babel-research.eu/?about=research_isd translates into http://babel-research.eu/content/research_isd.html . I found this by accident, hopefully it’s useful.

April 24th, 2009 at 7:38 am

has anyone tried scanning the barcode upside down? You mention the last digit not being as expected, maybe it would be the other way around, unless UPCs are always justified in one direction only. Thought it was worth a shot though.

April 24th, 2009 at 8:10 am

anyone tried send email to tsmit@sci.kun.nl ? maybe we’ll get some automatic response or something :>

April 24th, 2009 at 11:59 am

It keeps getting better and better. I wonder when they’ll come with the end solution

Fried Calamari

I know I’m just pointing out the obvious and sorry if it has been mentioned before, but this seems like a complete ripoff of Half-Life2. Besides the sound effects, but the story is the issue I’m talking about. How is this guy getting away with all this and not getting into law suits with Valve from using all of this stuff in his film?

April 25th, 2009 at 11:36 pm

Anyone else notice the first letters in reverse looks like Half-Life? Or maybe I’m just seeing things. Half-ELT?

May 2nd, 2009 at 12:40 pm

so this is probably super-picky-super-paranoid, but did anyone noticed the incorrect spelling of “involuntary” on the page w/the “involentary stomach discharger”?

think it means something?

May 2nd, 2009 at 7:24 pm

i cant believe people are still trying to dig deeper into this.the whole thing is dead.2 idiots made a not bad movie on utube.thats it!the whole thing is a dead end.no half life in this.

May 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 pm

I’d just like to point out that timacious d when anagramed only comes out as discutiamo which ironically means discuss in italian.

May 3rd, 2009 at 9:47 pm

On another note: Thibaut Neils is an anagram for Suitable Hint…

May 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 pm

So i was looking for evidence to sustain my theory that this whole deal is a JJ Abrams directed half-life movie. While searching i found this article

its old, like from the beginning of 2008, however the similarities between this box and the one Abrams references are undenaible

May 5th, 2009 at 10:45 am

Just wanted to throw this in… those HEX codes don’t seem to mean anything at 1st but when you put them into photoshop color picker thats a differant story… They seem to be the most color rich of that hue (if that makes any scene?) Another way to put it is this… When you select a color you can insert black or white adjust it… well with these colors are the raw color… no white or black added…

May 5th, 2009 at 7:23 pm

QUOTE FROM SilverCyanide link:

He’s never opened the box and never will open it because he says the mystery of what’s inside the box is more interesting than anything that might be in the box. “It represents infinite possibility; it represents hope; it represents potential… mystery is the catalyst for imagination… maybe there are times where mystery is more important than knowledge.”

Does anybody have a new update on this? Or has it really bleed to death?

May 10th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
The Thinker

Seeing as “Hell is what’s in the Box” and noticing the UEC (Possibly a DOOM Tie) maybe it’s something to do with a crossover between Half Life and DooM.

May 11th, 2009 at 6:28 pm

I noticed that UEC logo is always black sword and black triangle, but on the “TST” news broadcast it’s white. Mayby they want as to invers colours when it appears.

May 12th, 2009 at 7:06 am

in the picture of Nordon….behind the circle there are some letters….it could be some kind of clue

stop thinking that is something about HL
I participate in others blogs and we are agree that the box has a lot of things of Lost, and a lot of movies….but think….the only things about HL are not very importants….but about Lost….we can find…the numbers…hanso…the music….and in Lost some characters talk about some “magical boxes” or “cursed boxes”…..may be the creator took info from Lost to make this…so I think that we should be looking tho Lost more than to HL

May 13th, 2009 at 12:04 am

Related to my last coment <>

…decayed nucleus/dead cat” and “undecayed nucleus/living cat”, and that only when the box is opened and an observation performed does the wave function collapse into one of the two states…

May 14th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

has anyone noticed some of the misspelled words throughout http://www.babel-research.eu/ and some of the deeper branches of it, like the ‘involuntary’. on the front page, un the word WELCOME it says babel reseach is part of babel group. did you catch that? RESEACH, that’s: R E S E A C H, only one r.

has anyone tried inputting every word in the english dictionary into the ‘magic word’ entry box. you could manipulate a .rar password hacking program that tries the password against every word in a dictionary you input?
just to see all that works? or perhaps manipilate the actual flash file with something like cheat engine 5.5?

May 15th, 2009 at 3:43 am

Guys, look at the movie on WITB main (the original video from the upper quadrant). Watch it til the end and wait a few seconds. Now a second video will display (timacious last footage) Shorter but related, the end is… cool. Dunno if it will help to solve a little more of the mistery tough xD

And also about this… text. I suppose it was transformed using some key. May something of the key words that was found be a key to decrypt the sentence?

It’s called Eye of Horus, an ancient Egyptian symbol…

I am so hyped because knowing the history of Indy Films, they always lead to something great, and usually it’s from another country.
Win + Win=Epic win
Please stop relating this to cloverfield, it will be many times greater.
Also, chances are Tim Smit and co. just created the websites for hype. Yes, they contain references and all but I highly doubt they will contain every secret.
A great strategy for hype coming from some film making geniuses.
I can’t wait for this to be made into a full length movie and will be highly anticipating it.
Also, with all the random references to HL, Portal, and Black Mesa, why hasn’t anyone thought about who may do some of the soundtrack if they get it go hollywood, which i pray DOES NOT HAPPEN.
Also, who remembers when we almost reached absolute and “almost” destroyed the world. think about that.

In the babel-research website, there’s a lot of Illuminati iconography, the infinity sign on the top left, the eye on the top right ( as well as the alternate eye of Horus on the anti.jpg ) as well as the slogan “Unlocking the universe and achieving the impossible,” “Achieving the future.”

May 26th, 2009 at 1:12 am

I hope that everyone has watched the extra videos that appear after the whats in the box official high quality video thing at
-just wait like one second after whats in the box 2 see em.
+at the bottom it says the copyright belongs to babel rather than creator, which i find interseting.

Holy crap, I think I found a /clue/ at least.
The code, 125002 741350 when translated from hex, translates to PtP, according to http://home2.paulschou.net/tools/xlate/

I believe PTP would be related to Picture Transfer Protocol. What to do from there, I have no idea.

So, me and I my brother have been working all morning on the box and we’ve found a half substantial link to The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. August 16th 2008 is a Thursday. All the geeks out there will know that the day the world is destroyed by Vogons (accuses my possible misspelling) so, maybe the password or a way of finding more hints towards the password is hidden in The Guide! I am absolutely certain this whole thing is not set in The Guide universe, because it is completely the wrong style. But a possible clue could be there. Also Babelfish, babel research!

Some other stuff we found was that the surgical mask at the begging shows there is some kind of disease going around, along with the guards wearing gas masks. One of the stories seen at the bottom of the screen is “Millions feared dead” which can be heard when you click the left section of the box. This shows that the story could be linked to something before the august 6th incident. Possibly my theoretical disease.

When your login attempt at babel research fails, and the message appears something strange that occurs is that “systemchecks” and “accesspoint” are written as one word.

Schrödinger’s cat can obviously be linked to this, so maybe the contents of the box could be something i that exists in Schrödinger’s “probability cloud”. Something that the condition of which can not be proven without opening the box.

The Hanso foundation logo (which I THINK is from lost) appears on the Babel research website along with aperture science and black mesa logos, which is a link to both those universes. Also, looking at the biblical links in all of this (i.e. a tower which can touch God (Babel) which collapses) could be the passowrd.

Anyone tried it?Also, there is a twilight zone episode called “whats in the box?”. “Portrait of a TV fan. Name: Joe Britt. Occupation: cab driver. Tonight, Mr. Britt is going to watch ‘a really big show,’ something special for the cabbie who’s seen everything. Joe Britt doesn’t know it, but his flag is down and his meter’s running and he’s in high gear–on his way to the Twilight Zone.” – from the opening to that episode.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What's_in_the_Box – there is a plot summary here.
“The next time your TV set is on the blink, when you’re in the need of a first-rate repairman, may we suggest our own specialist? Factory-trained, prompt, honest, twenty-four-hour service. You won’t find him in the phone book, but his office is conveniently located–in the Twilight Zone.” – the closing narration.

Those are all my theories currently.

Have anyone noticed that the *What’s In The Box* movie on youtube was uploaded Friday 13 March ,,

Rise of the Dirtnappers (the video on the box site) is obviously a Left 4 Dead homage… that’s two videos with references to Valve games.

Is Abrams planning a project with Valve?

this is the true about this film and Tim Smit:

June 4th, 2009 at 8:01 am

There is a thing i want to say. In the Mythbuster film, with the phonebook, a reference to the box web site appeares at 3:49 – 3:50, right after the slowmotion part of the book ripping. olso the referrence appeares at the end…… i want to kow how to get to the part with the box….i can’t get past the red circle and the field where to write the code….how do i get past them? any help?

June 5th, 2009 at 7:09 am

in the beginnig of the movie you can see a few hazard signs in the container where the box is:
An X sign (‘HARMFUL’) and the one for FIRE(‘FLAMMABLE’), both in orange and a LASER RADIATION sing behind the box. these leads may help us to thinking about the hazardous nature of the box or its contence. Olso the box sits on a smal cubic support that goes in the box, that means the box is not a perfect cube, but it has a square hole in one of the sides….. that may help in finding out what is in there, so put your minds to this….and please, post anything you find or something, i feel that i’m alone……btw how do you get to the web page with the box and question mark… i can’t get past the red circle. i’m waiting for replies. tnx

There is a new video

and in source of this page is hidden mesage

I was trying to decode this but I faild :/

June 7th, 2009 at 11:22 am

A lot of paranoid theories would be crushed if you just turned up your brightness or contrast and read what is just underneath “Disclaimer” It says, “IT IS JUST A NON COMMERCIAL TEST!”

June 7th, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Through a little light digging on the Interwebs, I’ve discovered that March 13, 1964 (the day the “What’s in the Box” Twilight Zone aired) is also a Friday the 13th. It has been previously mentioned that the YouTube video was posted on a Friday the 13th.

Now, I dunno if there’s any kind of connection there, but there’s some additional circumstantial evidence. Has anyone watched this Twilight Zone episode to see if any further correlations can be drawn, or if it’s just a coincidental dead-end?

June 7th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

No time left, cannot say much.

The box is not a Joke

June 8th, 2009 at 9:29 am

guys… it has nothing to do with half life… they just needed audio for their video and didnt know how to make it… the video was originally a test film… fox contacted them and brought them in on part of “the lost experience” game… its all to do with the television series lost series… fox is just trying to make money… but there should be a 90 min movie coming from all this :)

Peace through power.

Peace through power? Brotherhood of Nod’s Slogan.

June 13th, 2009 at 12:43 am

No longer able to view anti.jpg.

Is there a reason behind this?

Oh. The image with the red highlighted percentages.
73.5% and 87% are highlighted.

The results showed a relatively high sunlight energy conversion efficiency of about 71%. In the years following, Babel Research managed to enhance the cell to an efficiency of 87% in 2012, using new types of polymers.

ABOUT 71% (73.5%?) and is currently 87%. Coincedence? No.

June 13th, 2009 at 1:11 am

The UEC’s recruitment poster has a slogan on it, this states: Peace Through Power as their motto.

The Brotherhood of NOD from Command and Conquer utilizes the same motto. They also have citadels inside their city (large towers), and their symbol involves an image within a triangle, just like the UEC’s.

June 13th, 2009 at 1:36 am

What if the number groups were switched around, cause the first group of numbers ends with a 2, not a 0. So instead of being 125002 741350, it’s 741350 125002. Could that work?

read through the entire page and have been following it for quite some while now. these puzzles got me hooked to such a point where i would do some serious no-lifing to figure out some more puzzles etc. i was wondering if any1 could provide me with some information as to when the next sections will be made public on wikibruce. i reckon you guys are still working on the barcodes + figuring out if the NOD slogan has anything to do with it. (i find it a bit more than just coincidence) i’d appreciate some new info or leads i can work on thank you very much,

June 19th, 2009 at 4:03 am

@bas woudstra – I think if/when the next big update comes along, there will be a new post at Wikibruce to cover the updates. This article is long enough as it is ;)
But discussion is still more than welcome (following the above disclaimers, of course!)

sorry for double post but

isnt it the box from hellraiser?
maybe it has something to do with it i dunno

July 1st, 2009 at 3:19 pm

I think this has something to do with the game Half Life. There are several points in the movie where they use sound effects straight from the game. The guys with the suits that chase the guy have voices of the Combine; they are also carrying what appears to be the pistol and SMG that are found in the game too. The thing in the sky (I presume to be a portal) is exactly like the portal the Combine use to come to Earth in the game too. When he is rummaging for a phone on the bus, you hear the news in the background talk of an “infection”, which is also reminiscent of the Headcrabs found in Half Life and it’s sequels to turn you into a zombie. On the bus at 3:25 the Brain Computer Interface gives him a view of a structure towering above all the others and the top is red. This is also oddly reminiscent of the Citadel in City 17, also found in Half Life 2, which was evacuated just like the city this takes place in, also due to the Combine portal. In Half-Life 2, the portal is at the top of the Citadel, I think that is what the red glowing part is referring to. (Picture here: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/56/160183847_79af292424.jpg?v=0)

Also, on the Babel Research website (http://www.babel-research.eu/?about=about) there is a list of names with some pretty intense science mentioned there, like Geomagnitism and Quantum Mechanics. It should be mentioned that, Gordon Freeman, the person you play as in Half Life, was a scientist and was the one that opened the first Combine portal by mistake. (I think, I never played the first one all the way through.) But at the bottom of the page there are 3 logos. The one in the middle (the blue circle) is the Aperture Science logo, characterized in the game Portal produced by Valve (Who also makes the games Half-Life and Half-Life 2), but is also seen in various places in the Half Life 2 campaign.

As for the strange box, it was never in a previous Half Life game, or any Valve game for that matter. It is still a mystery. But I think it somehow has something to do with the portal.

That is just a few things I’ve noticed. I think all of this has to do with the release of a new Half Life game or movie or something like this. It could very well be the long awaited Half Life 3.

July 4th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Suntriker, see my appendage to the disclaimer above. Yes, we know there are references to the Halflife and Lost universes, but these are borrowed references. This entire production was made by a fan of these properties, admittedly so, and there are also clear disclaimers in the production videos and sites themselves that this is a grassroots production. It’s not official promotional material for any upcoming Halflife or Lost media. Until that happens, until there’s announcement or deal struck or something changes, that’s the way it is. Not coincidental – definitely intentional – but not official.

For all the comments saying “how could you say it’s not connected?” – I’m not saying it’s not connected. I’m saying it’s not officially connected. Big difference. Fan fiction is all about expanding on existing property inasmuch as the law allows. This production is based on existing property. That is all at this point.

July 7th, 2009 at 4:04 pm

Suntriker, Bruce said the most important. But I would add some informations, like the ones at the Babel Research site. That can be a portal, but it has a different source. That tower is a blackhole solar energy converter, with no direct relation to Black Mesa and it’s experiments, and the original portal from Black Mesa that Gordon opened (not accidentaly, gman planned everything) was caused by a overcharge of xen energy concentrated on a xen superpure crystal causing a superbridge to the xen world.

However, the story seem to be similar, something went wrong and caused a lot of radiation and a supermass, possibly a portal supermass. So it could be connected with the Half-Life universe, but it’s outside the essential, it’s has not shown any direct relation to gordon freeman, black mesa, gman, alyxs or something else, other than the icons and soundtrack, which Timsmit probably used to avoid having to create his own.

I believe Timsmit will make a lot of references to the Half-Life universe on his upcoming film, but What’s in the box is another story, his story. It was the Half-Life references that made his “demofilm” so popular, so he’ll not leave them.

But now that he’s so famous, Valve could help him in many ways, one of them would be inserting real facts from the HL universe that weren’t revealed in his movie, or simply giving money.

That’s it, this comment should help the ones that don’t know that much from What’s in the box and/or the Half-Life universe. I could make a post of this… :)

July 7th, 2009 at 8:11 pm

Yo… I think that in the image here… http://www.babel-research.eu/?about=about … of the research facility has some writing… I am seeing odd dark spots which I think might be “anti-letters”, as I call them, where the outline is made of a letter by leaving dark spots where the letter is NOT. Could you check it out?

Also, the image is listed as “research.eu/images/Babel_complex_1.jpg”. Could there be a “research.eu/images/Babel_complex_2.jpg”?

July 11th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Hmm… in the news report, the first segment is from August 6th (the august sixth incident). However, the second part (the part from the “test” video, with the person running around) is from August 8th!!! The incident we have seen was not the August 6th incident?

July 11th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Wakukee, you gave me an great idea. Firstly, those who played HL2 know that somewhere it the middle of the game Gordon Freeman and Alyx find the dr. Mossman and soon escape from Nova Prospect (is it? I forgot) using teleport. But something went wrong, and they travelled in time on about 2 or so days. Secondly, when I was reading about WITB movie in the internet, I found some pages telling me that hero in the beginning of the movie wakes up and doesn’t know what is going on. That unconfirmed fact was embarassing me until now. When I read some info and watched the movie again the only thing that was making me think that this fact is false is that bottle which can be seen on the floor in the beginning. But if this fact is true, than we have possibility of time jump! I mean that in august 6th, something went wrong and before people was evacuated, that man was captured by random portal (like in the Half-Life, it was called “portal storm”) while he was walking somewhere with that bottle in his hands. And then, with this 2 days, whole city was evacuated and that man appeared in the same place, but in the “wrong time”, I mean he travelled in time for 2 days forward. And now militaries are looking for something, maybe for lost people. But now I think that something is wrong with them. Why that man was trying to escape from them? Why those militaries had weapons? Why they wasn’t trying to stop him using anything but weapons and helicopter (like, shout somehing)? Why they are need for this box? Why they couldn’t find that box for 2 days? Why they was walking around in the city which soon supposed to be destroyed (but not by them i mean)? And so on. Sorry for my bad english, I hope all of you guys understood me right.

July 12th, 2009 at 2:28 pm

> I am seeing odd dark spots which I think might be “anti-letters”, as I call them, where the outline is made of a letter by leaving dark spots where the letter is NOT. Could you check it out?

Sorry, but because of my bad english I can’t understand you right, can you explain it on some image so all of us could check the Babel_complex_1.jpg? Maybe you could mark that letter on that image.

July 12th, 2009 at 11:39 pm

This is one of the tricks to get money… Oh my god oh my god, what will happen in 2018??Nothing will happen, get a life!

July 13th, 2009 at 9:06 am

in case anyone doesnt know, there is a Lost reference in ep2 and they put ficticaous company from lost in the movie.
(off topic) that would be so cool if lost characters went to half life universe and met gordon.

July 18th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

did anyone also find that the dead birds are reminecent of the birds dying in slient hill when the darkness approches. that stuff only happens in the movie , i never witness it in any games of silent hill but it makes me wonder if that other dimension they seem to be opening a portal to is inspired by the hellish dimension in silent hill. especially since ” the box= hell”

July 20th, 2009 at 2:41 pm

I do not know if anyone else has noticed that in the second video, when you click on the “Due to recent developments, the box must remain closed, etc” it links you to a second video, the one with the bloody noses, and the explosion. If you look closely, when the bird falls there are two frames with green squares in them, if you pause it in the first frame two of the squares are red while the rest are green, and in the second frame, one is red and one is purple while the others are green. Some one should look into this, maybe.

Is there a connection between the UPC bar code 125002 741350 and the one from image from Leonardo Bode image, here:
Is there a better closeup picture of that bar code?

I tried to see if the UPC one could be translated in code 93 or 128 which include letters but failed. It currently matches perfectly only the UPC standard so I think those numbers are indeed important and thus the wrong check digit.

July 26th, 2009 at 10:23 am

Hey, how many have noticed the open FTP connection on babel research? Considering that this is one big hunt, you’d imagine they’d close up any holes, and just access the server directly. Is it a hint?

July 31st, 2009 at 9:48 am

Wait!! I found something very interesting. While looking at the source for the second video with the nose bleeds and dead birds, there were two scripts. When reloading an hour later, they both just disappeared. There were a bunch of comments, but the two that seemed to mean the most were two wrappers for functions labeled KIA August and KIA September, and also “TODO: Use HTTPS over HTTP headers.”

July 31st, 2009 at 10:28 am

Well, the 2nd of october was the first test run of the CERN particle accelerator. and the link to higgs, is the creation mechanism. It would explain, as Tim Smit works in the nanolab.

August 3rd, 2009 at 8:05 am

Again, looking at the planck time, the two heads is actually Niels Bohr and Einstein. More strikingly is the so called ‘eye’ it is just like the higgs process would predict, and the date’s called would project A Particle detector at CERN. as the matter of fact it is the CMS, and not the atlas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_Muon_Solenoid
I must admit though that the 2nd of october wasn’t the time of breakdown of the accelarator. but more importantly the week of the 6th august was the expected date of reboot of the accelarator.

August 3rd, 2009 at 9:47 am

Hum, interesting… Steam, the all Valve games plataform will be down at August 6th…

If you take the upc code(125002 741350)
and decode its hex value, the text is PtP.( you can try yourself at http://home2.paulschou.net/tools/xlate/ )
The letters make “P”eace “T”hrough “P”ower the slogan of that poster im not sure what the things to the left of the letters are though.

August 9th, 2009 at 1:42 am

Has anyone noticed the “Local protection team report back.” both in the audio clip and IN the film? There’s a conversation between the squad and the female voice and I think they are related… In the film the female voice says (from the point I can understand):
Female “Local protection team report back”
Male “??? Standing by”//”I’ve got a “?foreword here application?”
Female “95 illegal carrying immediate amputation”
Male “Roger that ready”
Female “10 0 ?ige?

Thats all I got. Anyone want to critique?

The capital letters of the scientists can be ordinated in “The Fall”…maybe this mean something

August 23rd, 2009 at 7:28 am

The suspense background music is hugely similar like at 1:14, 3:15, but then 5:20 sounds more like Star Wars..and why does the bag at 3:38 say black on it? That’s one of the main things that have been eating at me. Yes it’s black, but idk, why is it labeled?

August 28th, 2009 at 12:05 am

@Sam: I think it might be the brand name.

September 6th, 2009 at 12:34 pm

There are parts where the music is from Jurassic Park, but mixed.. so it’s difficult to recognize it.

It’s funny, but i realized that (along with other little details in the film) watching it after smoking weed.

September 10th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

I made a video some time ago with the information that i have got here, the user that did the post got credits dont worry i just made the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhrfd8pmE8s

September 14th, 2009 at 4:52 am

That numbers are my obsession:

I have read that Lost have been made based at the hl2 universe, thats why the plot of hl2 and Lost are so schemer and you cant keep thinking about it.

if Valve didnt existed maybe Lost didnt existed with that schemer, or just didnt existed.

But i think the plot of Hl in general are the most influence in the world.

And we can see the inspiration that cause that plot.

3 Finger Louie

the rabbit hole goes deeper, i dont think there is anything else to know until these dudes make an entire film, although i do agree with one of the comments on here that says that the box could be the same as the hellraiser box since the box equals hell, eitha way, pretty deep and interesting story line

September 19th, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Hi I was doing some research on this stuff the other night.

I did some searches on TIMSMIT and found a webpage for the guy who created the video and webpages with that thibaut Niels guy.

On his website it says that it was a trailer for a full length halflife 2 video they are making.

Also I believe there may be some other stuff on there to do with the WITB stuff.

If you move the mouse over the cable that is attatched to the planet some text shows up in the bottom right corner of the page

“Urea Unfits Vino”

I have no idea what that is about but i assumed it was some kind of anagram.. but i couldnt make sense of it.

I did find out that there is a type of cypher known as a vino cypher.

I havent looked into how the cypher works but im pretty sure that timsmit and thibaut are both encrypted words.
Anyway if anyone thinks there is something to it, comment back

September 19th, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Don’t know how long it’s been up, but now there is a disclaimer underneath the video at the website that says:

“In order to achieve the best result, some sounds and music elements were used without permission as a temporary placeholder. This site and its content is not affiliated with any of the entities responsible for the particular material in question.”

They would put that on for 2 reasons.
1) The industry contacted TIMSMIT and told him he had to put it there. BUT, how did they get a hold of him? None of us can…
2) They are trying to throw us off and TIMSMIT is in cahoots with them.

any ideas?

September 23rd, 2009 at 12:18 am

not sure if anyone has caught this yet,

on the babel research page, under the introduction and history section, it lists the department heads. they are all listed by first initial, then last name. if you take all the first initials you can spell “the fall”

not sure if this has any significance just yet

September 23rd, 2009 at 4:41 am

Haven’t seen anyone comment on it in the thread here, but has anyone else noticed the “Exposed” pic seems to match the pattern flashing on The Box between 0:45 and 0:55 in the video?

October 5th, 2009 at 7:20 am

Heres a video with an interview with TIMSMIT about whats in the box

October 10th, 2009 at 4:54 pm

Does anyone know if Valve has issued any statements on the use of HL2 sounds and the very similar aesthetic in the movie? The disclaimer seems insufficient for such heavy borrowing of sounds and similarity of designs and ideas in a film that’s making such huge waves.
Not only that, but it seems odd that it boasts itself as an original concept with all of these similarities, and yet makes a nod to Valve by putting the Black Mesa and Aperature logos on the Babel Research site.

Also, does anyone know why the copyright year for the short film seems to be 2018?

October 14th, 2009 at 5:09 am

To whoever said that the videos take place 2 days apart is wrong. in europe dates are NOT written the same. 6/8/18 is not june 8th, its august 6th. which means that the videos take place on the SAME day!

October 15th, 2009 at 9:54 pm

False. On the news reel, there are reports from 6-8-18 and from August 8th 2018, or 8-8-18. Two different days.

October 19th, 2009 at 9:21 am

Half – Life 2 Episode 1

“In the darkened alley where you first use your flashlight in the part of the game entitled “lowlife” if you turn on the alley you can see some graffiti and a bar code. The numbers below the barcode are 24724 which is the area code for freeman, west virginia.”

Hope this helps sum

Secret message in http://babel-research.eu/witb/stream/footage.html:

November 21st, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Some one else has properly mentioned this but (noevilsagasliveon) if you split it up it says
(no evil sagas live on) and SAGA is a hidden on the evac sheet. What could this mean.

December 7th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

This may well have already been mentioned, but at 2:19 in the video at http://babel-research.eu/witb/stream/ the ticker at the bottom says “LARGEST SINGLE COLLAPSE IN HISTORY SINCE BLACK MESA”. The link to the Halflife universe most certainly extends beyond simply an homage to Valve. I don’t think it’s officially linked, but the connection was definitely a purposeful move.

Lost Reference within Half Life 2 episode 2, featuring both the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 and the symbol seen throught lost.

Lost and Half life references both within the box mystery?

Also, test video! 5:31, for a milisecond, Blue screen appears as he puts something on! I cant slow it down enough to capture the exact frame, but can someone! Could be very important if its not already been done of course!

December 9th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Anyone notice it says “Babel Reseach” in the middle of their main page? Is this spelling error deliberate?

December 12th, 2009 at 5:38 pm

Also, if you stay on the babel research website long enough, in the lower right corner, a cat will appear randomly. click on it before it dissapears and it will open a MP3 file.

December 15th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

i spy half life 3

December 15th, 2009 at 6:14 pm

What if this whole thing is nothing more than a mindfuck?
The building seen in this picture:
Is a powerplan in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
This one to be exact.
Oddly, the first picture is found on the Babel website.

December 18th, 2009 at 5:51 pm

I think its all is dead…

December 19th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

The blue screen appears when he’s taking something off, not when he’s putting something on. At the beginning of the video, he puts on one of these computer brain interfaces. Could it help?

December 21st, 2009 at 7:54 am

More relation to the HL2 universe is throughout the video the camera glances at the tower three times, each time some sort of crawling tentacle-like thing is creeping up the three towers. In HL2 when on the platform going to the top of the Combine Citadel there’s all sorts of tubes and junk. Could this be some sort of link between HL and HL2? It would make sense that this happens after HL because of the relation to an infection. Maybe Babel is building off of Black Mesa’s research on portals and they accidentally open the universe the Combine come out of. Aperture Science fits into this as well. This idea of portals is becoming a theme.

Also I think a good direction to go in would be to see if we can get into ftp://babel-research.eu/
I’m trying to get the ws_ftp.ini but with little results.

December 27th, 2009 at 5:12 am

jim i found the exact frame of the blue screen of death. is like an error with windows 98.
exact time in video “05:21:06″
that numbers would mean something but i dont know.

December 29th, 2009 at 3:58 pm

UEC also stands for the Uranium Energy Corp. also, when you click the left side of the circle you can hear an english automated voice talking, and after a few seconds is overtake by a japanese reporter. if there is someone that speaks japanes/chinese, or can hear the english voice well enough, post

January 2nd, 2010 at 10:29 pm

HEY! Somebody with better software and know-how, overlay the hidden image from the army poster:

With this image (posted by another user):

Using the TOXIC symbol as the reference point.

Also, the image from the EXPOSED (http://wikibruce.com/uploads/2009/04/exposed-adjusted.jpg) page IS the symbol from the box. (pause at 00:54 of the main video for a good view)

January 10th, 2010 at 2:01 am

Would the mod please merge these two?

ALSO: The two anti images (http://whatsinthebox.nl/anti.gif and http://babel-research.eu/anti.jpg)…
Look at the top pair of arrows on the JPG image, and then look at the middle pair of arrows on the GIF image (of the box). They line up in angle pretty well. And the length of the line down from middle-most point of the box (2-d-wise) down to the bottom-most corner is just about exactly the same length as the distance between the arrows (along the heavy red line) on the JPG image, so perhaps they can go together as well…

January 10th, 2010 at 2:12 am

TimSmiT put out a new video, for a Netherlands’ band called Daybroke. Within the video there are all sorts of WITB references, including the object the girl carries through out the video being the very box.

At times 1:29, 2:22 and 3:15, you can see spots (the first and third being the hardest to catch.) with a the iconic WITB red diamond icon, with a question in it. Under it, there’s ??:??, in each instance.

Taking the hint from 1:43 and 1:44 in the video – the WITB poster, with the time on it (which changes from 1:43 to 1:44) and the clue in the ‘more info’ section about finding the right time to find more box – paired with a flash that shows at 3:27 – showing “http://babel-research.eu/ {1/3} / {2/3} / {3/3} .html” will give you a link to a new video.

I’m not giving the ‘solution’ away, though, if you pay attention it’s pretty easy.

Also, big thanks to Knizz at the unForums.

January 16th, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Just found this vid on the babel research website: http://babel-research.eu/witb/stream/footage.html
You think that is what the box did?

January 19th, 2010 at 10:02 pm

hey the 1:43 and 1:44 means something but …. oh this is freaking me out. and the website you published dont take me to another video.

January 20th, 2010 at 2:08 am

hey other thing is that the [1/3] [2/3] [3/3] mean to put the time that the simbols appear. didnt work for me but i think you type bad the numbers they appear. the second appear at 2:21.

January 20th, 2010 at 2:23 am

The Eye on the top on

its a picture from M. C. Escher
called “Eye” (1946)

im not sure if this will help but anyway this is one more info

January 21st, 2010 at 9:53 am

At 2:20, bottom of the HUD a news update reads:

“Largest single collapse in history since Black Mesa”

Indicating perhaps, that this takes place after the Resonance Cascade in Black Mesa?

January 21st, 2010 at 7:35 pm

new video: http://babel-research.eu/129/222/315.html

January 25th, 2010 at 6:29 pm

Following the instructions posted by Telos954,
I found the hidden video with the cars.
At the end of the video, you see the red ring with smoke coming of it.
Below the ring is the text: “MMX”, wich is 2010 in roman numerals.
In the sourcecode of the webpage of the video is the text: “The wait is not yet over”

I wonder what that means?

February 7th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

Taking a closer look at this picture [ http://babel-research.eu/images/Babel_complex_1.jpg ], I found what I think is the Babel Complex logo on the building. Someone may have commented on this before, but this logo is similar to the logo of the Black Mesa Research Facility from the video game, Half-Life.

Now, connecting this with the storyline of the Half-Life series, and the supposed date of the video’s event, this must mean that this event took place after the fall of the Combine (to be continued in Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and beyond), or this facility was made by the Combine.

February 18th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

At the end of the new footage it says MMX, these could be roman numerals which would be 2010. Maybe it’s the release date?

February 21st, 2010 at 5:01 pm
Morika Web

Nice to know the project is still going. I was worried for a while that it was cancelled.

February 28th, 2010 at 5:19 pm

Oke, well I dumped most of the site to my PC and uploaded it to my server.
Check it out..
Has anyone else come across that?
I also found 2 hidden MP3′s that im not sure if others have found

If anyone has any clue what this is all about.
Take note of the like Buttons that fade from pink to red, check their file names..its very interesting.

March 2nd, 2010 at 1:45 am

When looking the “Cars” video on blip.tv, in the “related videos overview” section on the right side there is note “SECOND HIDDEN”. Anyone knows why second?

March 2nd, 2010 at 7:12 am

yesterday Portal got updated and got some weird radios thing, the forum is working on decoding all those things

March 2nd, 2010 at 12:19 pm

Ive found some more.

I found a hidden crypted message on http://babel-research.eu/witb/stream/footage.html
It says:

a=b b=c
Tbmvuf up uif dsfx bu vogjdujpo. Xf xbudi fwfsz tufq

March 2nd, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Well, I don’t know if you still research, this one was pretty obvious. Went to the site and downloaded the hidden.mp3, reversed it and it said 20th November. Simple, but I though i’d contribute a bit too, cuz I didn’t found anyone mentioning it.

March 2nd, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Once again I’ll remind people – please read over the article, even do a search (CTRL-F) for text or filenames if you think you’ve found something “new”. I’ve adjusted file links now so the filenames are in the article text rather than straight links.

Please do this.
I typically moderate comments that -only- contain known information. Discussion, theories (valid theories), new items, solves, resources, news, etc are all good to go. In other words, contribution :)

March 3rd, 2010 at 10:07 am

So, I translated a hidden message obtained from http://babel-research.eu/witb/stream/footage.html which another user here pointed out. It isn’t a=b b=c though, it’s b=a, c=b! Going back through the whole alphabet, the message is translated as; “Salute to the crew at unfiction. we watch every step.”

March 3rd, 2010 at 11:41 am

a=b b=c
Tbmvuf up uif dsfx bu vogjdujpo. Xf xbudi fwfsz tufq

If you follow the same progression, each letter is the one before it netting you:
Salute to the crew at Unfietion. We watch every step.

March 3rd, 2010 at 12:28 pm

I’m sorry, they meant “Unfiction”. Not “Unfietion”. Surely they are referring to: Unfiction.com

March 3rd, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Could MMX be a double date? Such as 2010 2010 or 20.10.2010

So October 20th, 2010? Granted that is a Wednesday, so not typical of a game release date. I also thought it may be linked to binary but of course 1000100010 is not divisible by 8. But if we use 10001010 we get “Š” which of course is gibberish.

March 3rd, 2010 at 12:56 pm

On the posters it says:
“Steven Roeters”

This is his Hyves (wannebe facebook) page

Something about project “the box” is also on there…

Maybe worth looking into?

March 3rd, 2010 at 12:57 pm

fyi, babel-research.eu does not have ssh and sftp open, however, whatsinthebox.nl does. I have not tried any username/password combinations, but might be worth investigating

March 3rd, 2010 at 6:41 pm

So I wonder if anyone has found any significance to the Eye of Horus on the top right corner of that anti.jpg. Seems a little odd for it to just be there and not have any significance somewhere.

March 4th, 2010 at 5:37 am

The eye on the Exposed picture looks similar to the eye of GLaDOS

March 4th, 2010 at 6:50 am

Oh, and that lastfootage video smacks of either half-life’s portal storms or just something going wron in aperture science… or combineness.

March 4th, 2010 at 6:53 am

ruff_diamont –
he looks like the guy in the short video following the one with the floating cars – boxblip? It’s very short and is ‘hidden’; I can’t watch it a second time ’round somehow. Shows the event from another persepctive.
Also on that page it says “één-na laatste online” – which means penultimate in dutch. Explains the language they talk in in that short video. Maybe it should be translated?

Hope this is some help.

March 4th, 2010 at 3:11 pm

You might wanne take a look at this video:

Hey Girl by Daybroke

It a new dutch band and the artist that made the video for it is the same one that did the “what’s in the box” video. I actualy contains a clue:

abel-research eu/{1/3}/{2/3}/{3/3} html

can’t figure it out though….

March 5th, 2010 at 8:05 am

Nice catch on the Daybroke video! That’s definitely new. I’ve included a screen shot and embedded the video in the latest update. iiiinteresting!

March 5th, 2010 at 2:14 pm

I know this may sound unrelated, but Portal 2 was JUST announced (3 days after its ARG start) and as WITB is somehow related to it… We should pay attention to it.

March 5th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

So, a thought hit me. Isn’t MMX a type of Math Matrix eXtension system? Maybe someone should run the numbers from the barcode through it and see what happens? :D

March 5th, 2010 at 8:28 pm

The video also has a clue at 1:43, u can see the posterof a box with a questionmark, that has the number 1.43, it also has a text above it something like “What is the deception phase?”

weird, but cool

March 6th, 2010 at 6:57 am

P.S at 1:44 the numer changes to 1.44, the numers follow the timeframe of the video….

March 6th, 2010 at 7:10 am

Hey thebruce, look at comment 272 written by Telos954 on January 16th, 2010 at 8:51 pm. You probably miss it. We know about the “Cars” video from Daybroke video, so you put the last two updates in the wrong order. “129″, “222″, and “315″ is the time of the Daybroke video (1:29, 2:22 and 3:15) when we can see the WITB icon. There is also WITB poster at 1:43, just read comment 272. And sorry for my englisch.

March 6th, 2010 at 7:15 am

More spam from me, i know got kindoff curios

i think i know what to do with the link

there have been 3 videos o far, all with a diffrent namen
we had the news video, the video on the bridge, and the one with the cars,

filling in 1/3, 2/3, 3/3 with the names of the videos ???

March 6th, 2010 at 7:43 am
The Invincible PantuZ

and most of you dont even listen to the song and know what they say,

if you do , try to connect it to all the video’s and you will find more information ^_^

*Hey girl i wanna take you on a date*

the date on the video made on 06-08-2018 same date that revealse on the site if you type in – date

March 6th, 2010 at 2:01 pm

Thanks for the tips all, I’ve updated the end of the post with screenshots for what was likely the proper solution to the find the Cars video. Doesn’t look like anything else to find for the moment.

March 6th, 2010 at 3:34 pm

what´s in the box, episode “144″ the twilight zone, no se de que servira pero debe estar relacionado, busquen ustedes, chau

March 8th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

At the beginning of the Daybroke video there is a voice that is hard to make out when she opens the jar/box before becoming hypnotized…anyone know that says?

March 10th, 2010 at 11:43 am

There is also some text it looks like at 3:17 in the video, but it’s too small for me to make out with my PC…anyone have software to enhance that (enhance….enhance….enhance). :-)

March 10th, 2010 at 11:46 am

at the start of the ‘hey girl’ robot(camera/or something) is saying ‘drone control’ blablabla (I cant understand 3th word) and i think that girl is losing control :P

March 14th, 2010 at 11:26 am

Has anyone thought of looking up the bible writings for 1:29, 2:22 or 3:15?

March 20th, 2010 at 5:46 pm

Me and my friend think that Portal 2 will come out, then HL3. Not sure when though… SOMETHING with that reoccurring date though…

March 23rd, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Me and a friend of mine have been talking and we think that in the “Daybroke – Hey Girl” video. The thing she picks up on the street is not a camera. We think it’s the “Box” it self. 48 sec into the video you see her eyes change color. You can notice in her right eye a light red circle comes out. And on the left a very, VERY faint circle can be seen.

March 27th, 2010 at 12:29 am

If you take a look at one of the newspaper reports
, when clicking the right segment of the ring, you can see the u.e.c. logo. Another piece of paper has two rings,
one bigger than the other.

I don’t know if it has any potensial, but on the same page, on the piece of paper in the upper right corner there’s a ring. Also the text on it: Nachtmer. I googled it and found out that it means nightmare on dutch.

March 31st, 2010 at 8:53 am

Just found something in Tim Smit Mythbuster’s apparition:
In 1:49, “Tenacious D” is written in the bottom right of the screen.
And in 3:53, a box with a question mark appears.
Hope this helps.

April 1st, 2010 at 7:23 pm

Please, this is not Valve’s work. This is beyond Valve.

Sure, Half Life is referenced many many times, along with HL2′s sound being used in the film. But this doesn’t have Valve’s signature on it. You can always tell what’s Valve’s and what’s not.
Besides, Valve has both Black Mesa and Aperture Science. Why would they need Babel?

April 3rd, 2010 at 3:36 pm

I may as well throw my 2 cents in here…

If you’re still looking for clues in the barcode, the numbers in hex turn out to “PtP” (Peace through Power), so it doesn’t really mean anything special.
Also, No one seems to have pointed out that the two news videos have conflicting dates. The “entire city quarintined” one says 6-8-18, but the “Millions Dead” story says AUGUST 8TH… two days after the initial accident. Both these videos appear in the original teaser, so is it a mistake? It can’t be 2 days at once.

April 3rd, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Someone else mentioned that Timacious did another video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sIB2kL-BWc) with a red box and a question mark at 3:53 and at the very end. I checked it myself; and noticed that there’s something that looks like text under the box, but it’s very blurry and I don’t know how to make it more clear than it is. Is there a way to enhance it?

April 11th, 2010 at 7:03 pm

I just ran that bar code through my own bar code scanner and it gave me the product number of.

April 18th, 2010 at 2:44 pm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IaupCchXGU Looks to be related to all of this or is heavily influenced by it all, it has the Babel logo and the tower.

April 22nd, 2010 at 5:28 pm

does any one found the ‘attainabless’ in the witb.nl anti.gif?

it’s written ‘failsafe’ in the other anti image..

April 24th, 2010 at 2:02 am

Just noted something more.
In the audio transcription: “Tango Yankee November” are words from the fonetic alphabet. That translates to “TYN”.
Another thing: in the “Exposed” image is an arrow inside a circle. The same arrow can be found in the “anti” image. Maybe if someone lay out those arrows together we get something (I don`t have any image editing program now).

April 24th, 2010 at 4:33 pm

From the “Hey girl” video:
The girl is walking in a strange way, never taking her eyes off the camera and following it’s movements. also, some of the lyrics are ominous. (“Hey, Girl, i wanna enter your brain”)
It looks like whatever the thing was, it was addictive, to such an extent that she commits suicide.

May 16th, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Quick reminder for commenters: Please, again, read the article to find out if something’s already been mentioned or discovered, and look at the images too. Unless it’s new – newly published – chances are it’s now very old.

May 19th, 2010 at 10:53 am

I’m not sure if anyone posted this on here, I know it’s on Unfiction, but no one has made any sense of it. On timsmit.info, if you put your mouse over the upper tentacle in the bottom right corner of the world, the words Urea Unfits Vino appear in the bottom right corner of the screen. Do you think it has anything to do with What’s In The Box? Someone on Unfiction e-mailed Tim Smit about it and he said that the person did a good job and to keep looking. What does everyone think?

May 21st, 2010 at 6:04 am

Just had a thought. According to some people, I’ve heard that in portal 1, when you move the radio’s around rooms, you can pic up secret messages. This is from a recent update to the game. It might have some connections.

May 23rd, 2010 at 10:05 pm

Has anyone actually tried to read what’s written behind the box on the anti.gif? It /looks/ like it’s discussing the change from solar energy to anti-matter energy. The mathematics of it look like they hold up as well, but the end result (1.06066) looks to me anyway, like a reference to Prince Rupert’s Cube. On the same token, there are quantum physics references as well, so perhaps The Box uses a solar conversion method to power itself, in effort to contain another dimension and possibly allow transport to and from said dimension?

May 23rd, 2010 at 11:45 pm

about the hey girl video, i checked and if you scroll down in the description, it says this:

|_| |_|
Find the right time in
order to find more Box.

that is probably hinting at the stuff you found in it about that other video, but i cant help but wonder if it has a few more secrets in it. please look further into that video.

I’m digging through the source engine GCF files, and in the sounds, there is the “62 long” audio clip, but forward. The file is alarms62.wav, so it’s probably not “62 long” but “62 alarms” I’ll keep looking through the files for any more similarities.

I am curious to know if anyone else has noticed that on the anti page, when you change the contrast and separate the images, there is invisible text that is reversed, and can only be revealed through contrast change. Also, the picture in the warning picture of Plank, and Einstein, lead me to believe that it has to do with the quantum theory because they met to discuss the use of light and protons. I tried to do what research I could with radiation and there theories because of the radiation level shown at the beginning of the original film.

June 18th, 2010 at 3:14 am

I looked back on the things that happen when you type
certain things into the “http://www.whatsinthebox.nl/” website and babelresearch changes to babel re-search
I think this means to not research for something but search again for something most probably the box. So they didn’t make it if its a re-search so who did?
(note: not sure if this has been mention before as far as I can tell it hasn’t)

July 4th, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Hi there, i was visiting tomsmit.info and wacthing the video with the phonebook myth and at the end, this error occures in the clip : “CAVIStream Synth: System Exception – Access Violation at 0x27df7b1, writing to 0×0 ” I can’t remember if it’s the same exact line because i couldn’t access the site for some reason. I know this is a video conversion error [divx x268 or whatever, i just googled it] but it seems it’s embedded in the actual video, and must be one of tim’s misterious clues , hopefully. Maybe you guys can figure it out. [sorry for my bad english[

July 17th, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Has anyone noticed the the BSC ( http://babel-research.eu/?about=research_bsp ) is the only thing NOT seen in the video clearly, you can see the CBI (If you can’t see it you might want to get a new monitor, or your eyes checked) and the ISD is used to take out the cop guys in the bus…. well, I guess that the outer area is a small BSC sending power into the center starting the circle…

July 23rd, 2010 at 6:02 pm

I tried to add anti-3dark as transparent layer overa Babel-Research website, but i don’t have a proper software. Can someone do this? I think this will give us some clues.

July 25th, 2010 at 6:29 am

Vous aviez déjà vu ceci ?

A priori ça pourrait être la conclusion de ce buzz qui dure depuis plusieurs années. C’est à dire la sortie d’un film “The East Accident” basé sur “Half-Life”, “Lost” et donc, “What’s in the box”.

Après si vous lisez le commentaire de l’auteur ça me paraît étrange…

“Hi, my name is Roman Yavorsky, I’m 16 and this is the teaser of my first film “The East Accident” on motives of the saga Half-Life.”

C’est qui ce type ? Et Tim Smith il est ou ? Finalement ça serait juste inspiré de WITB ?

Voici un interview de lui. Si qqn parle russe ça peut aider !

J’attend vos commentaires avec impatience ! J’y pige vraiment plus rien…

August 1st, 2010 at 10:36 am

Timsit made a comment on his channel on the 1st of august, telling us there is more news coming up !
maybe in 4 days? (8th of august)

I’m excited!

August 2nd, 2010 at 3:41 am

Last time nothing happened… :\

August 3rd, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Just found witb and wikibruce, and have to say I’m looking forward to any future progress (if any).

Not sure if this is the best place to post this or if it’s old news and irrelevant due to the poor quality of the layer, but I was using Gimp to mess about with the colour curves of anti.jpg from http://babel-research.eu/anti.jpg and found a block of colour with what looks to be handwriting over it.

This is the best I can do wih my poor skills but thought I would put it out there since it is not in the collection of overlays in the main posting.

August 4th, 2010 at 10:09 pm

Nothing happened… i mean 6th of august

August 7th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

I think I found something!!
>>There is much more to come. Things have been crazy. S.t.a.y. T.u.n.e.d.

Well, I posted it on some jabber conference and I found out that THERE IS HIDDEN SYMBOL between “to” and space before “come”.

August 9th, 2010 at 3:36 am

In Firefox if you put this symbol in address bat itll give you %EF%BB%BF

August 9th, 2010 at 3:39 am

And if you translate EF BB BF from HEX to DEC you will get

August 9th, 2010 at 4:00 am

The text behind the graphic in the anti.jpg picture is an article on a type of solar cell. It is repeated a couple of times, for filling the background I guess.

There is one alteration to the article and that’s the yield percentages of the solar cell described in the article.

If ‘The Box’ hold the key to a solar cell capable of the mentioned efficiency, this will change the world as we know it :-)

Take a look at the original article at

also, at the bottom of the text there is the word ATTAINABLENESS in light grey…..

…Overtime everything is possible….

August 10th, 2010 at 8:45 am

Sorry, I messed up the hyperlink in my pervious posted comment..

Look at:

EF BB BF represents UTF-8 according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_order_mark
Don’t know if this EF BB BF clue thing is a clue at all.

August 10th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Okey, i just got PM on YouTube from Timacious. He said that we don’t have all parts to open The Box. We need to wait a little more, that’s what he said.

August 10th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

If you LOWER the contrast on the HQ “Whats in the box? test film” page (gained by pressing the upper “section” of the box on http://www.whatsinthebox.nl” you can see “Its just a non-commercial test!” below the “DISCLAIMER” sign.

Also, the second “anti” image (the “exposed” one) appears to be the overlay that was on the box when the protagonist in the WITB film pointed The Box at the gigantic portal above the three towers of babel. If we overlay it there, and then overlay the first “anti” image (circle-arrow to circle-arrow, which lines up!) something may become apparent. IDK.

August 10th, 2010 at 6:31 pm

As far as the ef bb bf thing, look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_order_mark

August 13th, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Hey… Was pretty interested in the whole concept of WITB myself, I discovered some stuff as well (amongst those mainly digging and grabbing all code), like the full list of question-response pairs on the WITB site:

operation2347 = [THIS REDIRECTS YOU TO "http://babel-research.eu/witb/UE/"]
please = who are you, Dennis Nedry?
tenacious d = simply the greatest band on earth
babel = why are you giving me the directions, if you are the one who needs them
thebox = what’s in it
whatsinthebox = soon the world will find out
babelresearch = babel re-search
saga = noevilsagasliveon
hanso = 4 8 15 16 23 42
4 8 15 16 23 42 = SYSTEM FAILURE ((((a movie reference? I think so, but I forgot where it was…))))
pandora = Copay Pales
date = 06-08-2018
help = high contrast
[ANYTHING ELSE] = uh uh uh, you didn’t say the magic word

I also send timacious an email (english unfortunately) but no response… I guess he gets a lot of those.

SUGGESTION: Does anybody know any more advanced methods of steganography? And if so, try to decode as many pictures as possible using those? Just look on wikipedia Steganography for a reference how well can a message/image/file be hidden in a picture.

August 16th, 2010 at 2:11 pm

[@rhadEE] Although it scared the living shit out of me when it happened, this is true i also got it. At the end of Tims mythbuster video on his website, just when they confirm the myth, Tim’s partner takes a step towards him and the video ‘shorts’; a loud buzzing is heard as well as red text on the video saying:
“CAVIStream Synth: System Exception – Access Violation at 0×27df7b1, writing to 0×0″
This plays for about the last 10-20 seconds or so of the video. I’m sorry if this has been busted already, but i guess it’s worth a look.

August 17th, 2010 at 4:35 am

This is a little far fetched but I am still posting it any way I am referring back to both my previous comments. I think that a SAGA is some sort of alien and the box is it’s device this would explain how babel has to search for it and no evil sagas probably means there are good and bad sagas. Or maybe the box is the saga alien/aliens or it contains an evil saga. I think this explains a few things but I say again this is rather far fetched.
Also I am pretty sure this has nothing to do with half life!!!!!!

August 17th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

to Olav

I aint seeing the symbol in Chrome or ie8
also the numbers wont wont on this site in de following combo
then same site but with these numbers instead

August 19th, 2010 at 2:15 pm

4 8 15 16 23 42 is a reference to Lost. So is Hanso. Man, Lost ended some months ago and people already forgot these numbers… Shameful.

August 19th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Well, it was my fail. There is symbol like this in EVERY youtube comment, so I gave you a false track, sry.

August 20th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

I am just announcing that timsmit uploaded a video on his YT – just a trailer for a next daybroke music video.
I couldn’t see any clues hidden there.
But the effects are epic and I think that the full version will have something in it.

August 23rd, 2010 at 12:13 pm

hey look this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWGUHcpIuVI

is a new video but i didn’t find anything about WITB.
maybe you can.

( i know my english is so bad but i studing yet)

August 23rd, 2010 at 1:00 pm

From the last video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWGUHcpIuVI) from Timacious -thank you Santiago didn’t notice the video before : ) – At this moment i’ve just seen two websites: http://mustsee.nl/miface.asp & http://www.daybroke.com/ both are dutch. Someone that can help us? (google translate isn’t enought for me : /). Other details:
-The numbers on the knob(while covered by fingers) of the guitar that are visible: 1257 and 0 or 10
-The square that is flippin on the street appears to be the same on the video of the girl who nose bleeds.
Note: the knob and some other things appears on http://www.timsmit.info/

August 25th, 2010 at 1:45 am

I think i saw Babel at 00:13 in the video
“Daybroke – Sabotage Teaser”
if it was babel, im the first to get the WITB connection :D

August 25th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Ok i don’t know if this has been said yet, but i can’t find anything referencing it yet, so here it goes.

There are multiple items in the film and the babel research website that are Half-Life 2 related. For those who don’t know what Half-Life 2 is, it’s a very mysterious in story video game that, much like the first half-life, puts you into the shoes of a scientist, named Gordan Freeman, who worked in an underground facility named Black Mesa (1st TIE-IN: The Black Mesa logo is placed on the bottom of the main page of the Babel-Research website). Black Mesa’s main project was being worked on by you, Gordan Freeman, to accomplish various different outcomes, but something bad happens and before you have a chance to stop the project entirely, the project goes haywire and causes a rift, or portal, to a world of aliens/monsters to be unleashed into our world.

Sorry about the way i’m wording all of this, im not the best summarizer :-P

*SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT BEATEN HALF-LIFE 1* At the end the first game, after you defeat the source of what was controlling the monsters/aliens *Or so you think…..* you finally get introduced THE MAN, who looks like your average “large firm” business worker, who you see through out the game, that tells you all the events you have just went through were a test to see if his advisors were really interested in giving you a job to work for them. By you, the gamer, deciding to play the 2nd game, you decide to take the offer and work for THE MAN and his business partners.

Now this is where more of the references come into play.

In beginning of the 2nd game you get an ire wake-up pep talk by THE MAN and get “placed” into an area not like Black Mesa. You have no idea what the time period is, but know that it has be a good amount of time after the first game because the weapons you see in the game and the technology is nothing in comparison to what you saw in the first game. The place that you are in is called City 17 and it’s where the game takes place the whole time (2nd TIE-IN: Everything from the abandon cars, to the urban/dutch looking houses and apartments you see in the the Test Film, look like City 17). As you continue on to observe the city, you see how the society is mistreated by the authority in the game, called The Combine, and that the population diminishes drastically every day. The Combine, at first, look like your average humans in a authoritative outfits, but then you start to see the rest of the Combine and you get to see these giant tripod looking warmachines that are very organic and alien looking in many ways, and the flying machines are the same way. It’s quite interesting. Every noise you hear the Combine make in the game, soldiers and organic machines, are heard the “Test Film” (3rd TIE-IN: The noises you hear from the men in white, the flying vehicle, the gun shots, and most of the loud speaker phrases spoken in the film are all from Half-Life 2).

The last two references i noticed were the tower with the storm above it and the logo at the bottom of home page of Babel-Research website, known as Aperture Science. The tower resembles alot of the main structure in the middle of City 17 that houses all of the combines projects and warmachines. In Episode 1 of Half-Life 2, you see this tower in a fragile state as a rift appears over the top causing a storm, if you will, tearing apart various key components of the foundation that could cause a catastrophic event to happen (4th TIE-IN: The event we were about see at the end of the film right before it ended resembles a lot of the same idea). And finally the Logo. The logo is from 2 games actually, but are related in some ways. Towards the end of Episode 2 of Half-Life 2, you figure out that there was a competing company with Black Mesa, known as Aperture Science, that had a science vessel/Ship that got lost in a undisclosed Arctic location that had unimaginable technology the company Aperture Science created. The logo is also from a game called Portal. The whole game you are a test subject in Aperture Science Main Facility. At one point you can see that Aperture and Black Mesa were competing with each other. Portal was made also by Valve who made the Half-Life games (5th TIE-IN: The logo can be found on the bottom of the main page of the Babel-Research website).

Sorry for the long read, but I felt giving a little knowledge with the references I found would be helpful. So, that being said, my question to anyone who can shed some insight in this is, “Were the similarities between the film, it’s websites and the Half-Life games unintentional? and if they were intentional, Was the point of the film supposed to be a bridge between Half-life 1 and 2?” Just something to ponder…

PS: The film is awesome! :-D Hopefully it can become a full feature film.

August 28th, 2010 at 6:25 pm

@jordan – tl;dr ;)

August 29th, 2010 at 8:22 pm

You made it a little bit clearer, but answer to your question is I would say NO. Why? This film is not by Valve (nor is somehow supported by them) – the only way this would be a bridge would be a fanmade bridge. Also – as you said, if it were a bridge, it would have to include many years… Finally, WITB (or at least the test film) is already inside the City 17, therefore AFTER HL1… This catastrophe coming in WITB might look similar to the one in HL, but I think it is a different one, somehow related to the box and/or controlled by it.

August 30th, 2010 at 3:27 am

I suppose Jordan was going to say “Was the point of the film supposed to be a bridge between Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2 Episode One?” If so – then I think that similarities were intentional and film IS supposed to be a bridge. BUT IT’S NOT HL.

August 30th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Obviously, people recognize many of the film’s references to the Half Life saga. It’s plain as day and right in everyone’s face, but what i want to know is to what in Half Life is the film referring to?
My theory is it has to be the beginning of the initial portal storms, invasion of earth by The Combine, and the resulting Seven Hour War.
information on the Seven Hour War can be found here http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Seven_Hour_War
This war is only mentioned in passing during the Half Life saga, but it is the turning point of the human race in the Half Life universe.
As is mentioned in the article on CombineOverWiki, after Gordon Freeman (the main protagonist) defeats Nihilanth, leader of the Xen aliens, he is put in stasis by the G Man. The G Man claims that if he hadn’t done this “all the effort in the world would have gone to waste”, hinting that his emplyers wanted Gordon to be saved from the destruction that was about to happen.
The Seven Hour was, in short, a brief conflict where The Combine defeated the forces of Earth in only 7 hours.
This war resulted in the enslavement of mankind, the creation of the suppression field(a field making all humans on earth sterile) and Earth’s assimilation in the Combine Empire.
The footage in the original video “What Is In The Box?” shows what looks like a portal storm above the three towers. A portal storm is an event that creates multitudes of portals to other dimensions. These portals cause havoc wherever they hit.
The Combine may have learned about Earth through Portal Storms, and used these storms to invade Earth.
My advice : look up the portal storm scene from Half Life 2: Episode 2, and watch it carefully. Then, watch the “Last Footage” video and see how the two waves of energy are extremely similar in form.
This, among with the huge number of references to Half Life, leads me to believe that this is the story of what happened after the Black Mesa incident, and the beginning of the Seven Hour War.

August 31st, 2010 at 12:39 pm

Still – WITB is going to be a full-feature movie sponsored (or whatever) by Hollywood something… It is nice as an inspiration and a setup place, but not the real story – such a giant movie would never be good with copyrights and stuff from Valve.

August 31st, 2010 at 1:46 pm

And once again to one more human I tell that the box has nothing to do with half-life, look for proofs yourself.

September 2nd, 2010 at 11:58 am

hey if you click the part of the circle which will show you the the 9 minute film
watch it
and wait a few second another movie will be shown
it shows the beginning of the apocalypse

September 2nd, 2010 at 2:37 pm

I was just sitting here and thinking, staring at numbers and figures on this site. Suddenly, i realized a thing, it might be tiny and random, but here it is nonetheless.

“129″, “222″, and “315″
129 + 93 = 222
222 + 93 = 315

And as a sitenote

39 + 93 = 129

September 4th, 2010 at 2:56 pm

39 + 93 = 132 no 129

September 8th, 2010 at 6:24 pm

Oh dear, i made a typo. I find it hard to see how your message ever made it this far, but that attitude of yours is not really very teamwork inspiring. I bring something i personally found interesting to the table, and i made a typy, and now im an idiot. I dont know if you have contributed with anything so far, but would you please not insult the rest of us while we try to have some fun solving this? Critizism and corrections are okay, but there’s no need to start being insulting towards others for making a silly mistake.. Thats pretty much just childish.

This message is directed towards Santiago, who apparently feels like the way to solve a riddle is to insult someone for trying.

September 10th, 2010 at 6:46 pm

New daybroke music video on his YT channel:
the boxblip clip appears on one of the TV’s at 1:18. haven’t seen anything else yet

September 24th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

I’ve watched at the movie closely, and the hazard sign from 2:31 reads this:

UEC Missile Site
Under direct authority of [crossed out]
General commision

Also, do the windmills have an (altered?) Babel logo on them? Best seen on 2:15;12.

There are some other unmentioned ‘easter eggs?’ / references, but I haven’t looked at them yet.

September 28th, 2010 at 2:13 pm

I’m starting to wonder..

Maybe this whole thing is just a sort of wicked promotion project for Darybroke? I mean, they certainly have gained quite some popularity from all of this, and all the clues seems to always lead us back towards them..

Maybe its not half life or lost related, just.. a new album coming out?

September 29th, 2010 at 6:13 pm

okey okey sorryyyy it was a mistake, but i said that as a joke but perhaps you didn’t took very well, i said again, sorry

and the number 132 never appears, i said “THAT” for this.

why is important the number 132 if you write this wrong?

sorry my inglish :$

September 29th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

the car’s license plate is write in the normal form, beginns on left side. But the sing for Netherlands (NL) is right. in europe the national id is left too

later you can see that the cola-truck rides on the wrong side because in netherland you must drive on right side.

October 3rd, 2010 at 2:19 pm

The car has an alternated license plate at 1:14, but later at 1:20, you see an unaltered license plate of another car, 53-DR-JG.

When you lookup this license plate in the dutch license database, it states that there is no license with that combination known (check yourself at https://ovi.rdw.nl/default.aspx )

When the Mitsubishi Canter truck drives through the wall, you see a mirrored code on the left side: “LV-52″

The Cola truck at 2:26 also says “Babel Products”

October 4th, 2010 at 12:11 pm

The first hit on google on the query “the d” is the Tenacious D website:

That would confirm the relevance of the Tenacious D t-shirt..

October 4th, 2010 at 12:28 pm

The license plate “The D” stands for “The Defender”, as stated in Tim Smit’s submission for Mythbusters in 2007. So, a good chance it is unrelated to WITB.

The licence plate (and Tim) can be seen in his video:

The license plate is visible at 2:41. Tim points at it, and the subtitles state “and the other end to The Defender”. He also says it (in Dutch).

In this video there’s also a link to “Tenacious D” present, see the illustration at 1:47 in the bottomright corner.

I’m guessing Tim just has a thing for The D, and it’s unrelated to the whole WITB story…

October 4th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

I decompiled the SWF, looking what else could be entered into the text box and what result, everything here is mentioned, there is no password to anywhere else than the UEC site, i guess we’ll have to wait

October 10th, 2010 at 9:08 am

Did that already on 357.

October 20th, 2010 at 12:58 pm

On Sabotage video we ca also see The Pick of Destiny in 0:10-0:13.
53-DR-JG is written on cars license plate in 1:19.
59-WTP-7 is trucks license plate in 1:28.
Same truck destroys the wall and there is reversed LV-52 writtenleft from it.
in 1:56 sing says “keuze uit wel 60 soolten”, which means “choice of as many as 60 species”(Google tranlslator).
Sorry for my bad English, I’m from Poland and I’m fourteen, I’m still learning…

October 24th, 2010 at 9:02 am

i found this picture of Tim Smit on google from flickr it was uploaded by kalitchoutwo and i discover something strange

look closely in tim’s t shirt (hight contrast and the luminosity and ajust it ) there are letters and numbers i think it say machoerosagape it would be macho- eros-agape or maybe saga somthing . plus there is the box symbol and the ? and look closly below the box 31-12 i think maybe it a date or something . fu** this chi* maybe some noobs works

October 31st, 2010 at 11:42 am

Well I was looking up on it and I found this:

Its the box, with a question mark, related to the magazine’s from a college in their area.

This was discovered in the photo: http://araag.free.fr//yourteube/site_whatsinthebox.nl6.png

which comes out to mean: ” The Pick of Destiny”

Also, this image was found too: http://whatsinthebox.nl/anti.gif

November 18th, 2010 at 12:45 pm

I don’t know if this will be a clue, but if you go to http://whatsinthebox.nl/pro.swf you’ll see that when you put the mouse on the box, there appears a lot of question simbols down, hiding some text).
So, if read the second line you’ll read something like:
Write TIM THIBAUT NIELS music ted by SEN RETERS dir of photogra TIMSMIT production design THI NIELS IT.
Maybe (Write TIM THIBAUT NIELS) tell us something?

December 13th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

When box is red on pro.swf there is a letters on it. i only see “NOW I’M COMP…” and “Tenancius D”. i thing there is a clue but somone must read all on this box.

December 27th, 2010 at 8:39 am

I found another three things in sabotage video:
1) At 1:04 on pipe is the box with red ring.
2) At 1:19 on other TV screen is Hey Girl video
3) At 2:15 on the fallen wind-tower is babel research logo.
Sorry for my bad english

January 15th, 2011 at 3:25 pm

there are pics from the sabotage video:

the box

hey girl video

babel research logo

January 18th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

The text on the box that you can read on the /pro.swf page are the lyrics of a song called BEELZEBOSS (THE FINAL SHOWDOWN) from TENACIOUS D. I read it on another forum (http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27633&start=15). ;)

Shit man, I hope we’ll find out what to do now very, very soon!:O

January 22nd, 2011 at 7:18 pm

In pro.sfw there is something written in these changing letters and numbers at the bottom. I could read “Fast”, “read”, “Saga”, but others were too fast.
I also read all the letters at the bottom that were “crossed out” by question marks:
O TIO nts ST WHAT IS IN THE BOX ers TI crea TE O rector phy BAUT MSM S TH IMS MEU S dito IM ce t ec MIT UT dit RTE LE R UR OOST d AR.
I don’t know if it does help, but…

Ty Bray & Co.

My roommates and I have been just WITBing all night. I think this is the 3rd hour? Anyway, I drew from my notpr0n experience and checked the page source for the last_footage and testfilm page. Clicked on footage.html (about two thirds down the window). At the bottom of the page it brought me to, there is a highlighted comment reading:

Any help? :)

Viewing the source code of the main Babel Research page shows “other.gif” along with the 2 other “schrodinger.gif” and “hanso.gif” already mentioned.

This “other.gif” contains two logos, only one I know off (the blue tesselated circle) which is one of the Aperture science logos, might be hinting at the release/link with Portal/Portal 2 – as I don’t know how long this “other.gif” has been available to view.
Maybe were gonna get a new video at the release of portal 2? or the next installments footage will take place at Aperture Science? Is the installation the guy is first in actually Aperture science labs?

January 25th, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Oh, I hope it’ll be a movie! One in theaters! I would be so excited! At times, it sends chills down my spine… But still, I find it AMAZING to wonder, “What IS in the box?” That’s what I say when anyone asks what I’m thinking…. Mostly, it’s true. But if this is a movie, I must go see it! XD

For Ty Bray & co ,

The codex for the jumbled sentences it’s a=b and b=c, using the programming lenguage means that b affects (is going to be) a.

February 21st, 2011 at 1:30 pm

seems you had nothing to do with this video here eh?

February 21st, 2011 at 2:26 pm

When I watched the ‘Hey Girl’ movie on youtube I noticed that the girl said something at the begin of the clip. I changed the pitch and speed of the song and then I could hear what she said. Which was in Dutch: ‘Kijk eens aan’ in English: ‘Hey, look at that’ Also there was a voice in the background which is from the girl behind her who says: ‘Niet oppakken’ English: ‘Don’t pick up’. The sound is here: http://www.2shared.com/audio/y2lYdMQG/N_pakken_Hey_Girl.html

So this basically means nothing, probably just a normal reaction.

Also when I watched the mythbusters movie on youtube I saw the WITB logo. This makes the start of the project 2 years earlier. More people may have point this out, but anyway here it is: http://www.2shared.com/photo/d-6Z0b7C/WITH_Mytbusters.html

March 8th, 2011 at 1:51 pm

hey someone know about ATTAINABLENESS= “the state of being achievable”. WHAT F—— mean

March 14th, 2011 at 11:59 pm

At 2:26 in the Sabotage video we see someone that looks like the girl from “Hey Girl”. Spooky.

March 15th, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Am I the only one who noticed the aperature science logo on the babel research website or am i just the only one dumb enough to find this significant

March 17th, 2011 at 9:38 pm

No jimbo, you’re not the only one, and it’s not significant… check the disclaimers again. Since this is not an official production but a fan-made one, any connection to Halflife or Lost is purely inspirational.

March 18th, 2011 at 8:09 pm

Might have been mentioned but in regards to the two truck when you mix coke and mentos you get a chemical reaction in the right container capable of causeing an explosion could the be a hint towards the myth busters coke and mentos video???

March 23rd, 2011 at 6:18 pm

Don’t know if this was really looked at because of the numbers code in the “Hey Girl” video, but from 2:58 to about 3:07, while she’s tripping out, it looks kinda like the stuff from the Last Footage video where thing start floating up toward the ??? and swirling around.

March 26th, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Anthony, what you found is awesome :o

Translated from Dutch To English It says

“Hey, stand over there by that bridge so I can film you, right there by the railing.”

“The lensecap is still on, take it off! Don’t film me”

“Yes I will, I want to! Stand by that railing already!

Do something funny, make a pose or something.
Erhm honey, your nose is bleeding.”

“yours is too.”

“Ah F**k”

and then the birds fall out of the sky. It’s probably some kind of background story to WITB.

April 13th, 2011 at 5:16 am

PEOPLE! Me and my cousin just discovered something creepy. On http://www.whatsinthebox.nl after removing articles to create” exposed” box disappeared! Then a cat from babel reaserch appeared but three times larger!
Heres proof: http://img543.imageshack.us/i/catgh.png/

April 17th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

“why are you giving me the directions, if you are the one that needs them”

babel – tower of – escher – babylon – near east portal – maths

Etemenanki – Sumerian: “temple of the foundation of heaven and earth”

I dont know if any of this has relovance… but thought it might.. espesh considering escher eye turns into egyptian eye… escher having produced the tower of babel, Etemenanki – located in the near east portal… like egypt…?

April 24th, 2011 at 2:46 pm

i know it’s not very easy to do a movie but how much longer do we have to wait ?

April 26th, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Looks like there’s something new coming…

I just found these two:

* nope, not new ~thebruce

April 27th, 2011 at 2:51 pm

I was looking at the http://www.whatsinthebox.nl/pro.swf (posted by Bart if it wasn’t originally his post then I thank who ever posted it) and I noticed that when you move your mouse over the thing box in the middle some of the letters in the credit thing are blanked out so I took a screen-shot and those numbers/letters that are changing all the time clearly spelt out “READ” so I read and this is what I got but its just gibberish
“PR DUC S prese a MY ERY OF MYSTERIES production write SMIT THIBAUT NIELS music ted by S EN ETERS dir of photogra TIMSMIT production design THI NIELS TIIT special effects TIMMIT screenplay written by IBAUT NIELS TMIT wbsite complex by TIM MIT film e r TI MIT produ d and dir ted by TIMS THIBAL NIELS ad al thanks to F ANK T ST J EN an M KUP” see if anyone can do something better with this please do.

I hope this is worth it.

April 29th, 2011 at 5:33 am
try this

idk if youve tried it yet but tru laying exposed over the research pages, i would but i dont have the right EQ.
at the bottome of the header next to the header there is a definate “TE” so i guess match that up with one of the pages and the arrow should be on something

May 4th, 2011 at 12:06 am

tim smit the director of witb is no longer working on the project :-(

May 10th, 2011 at 8:33 pm

hey Sadfun, how do you know that? i mean, you have a contact with Tim Smit??

May 13th, 2011 at 6:13 pm

I think I know what the box is made of. But before I tell you, Matthew, That was the backstory, if you watch till’ the end, the tower explodes. Anyway. The box is made of black solar cells! I remeber one comment on this that tells about the writings on somthing about converting solar energy to somthing else, and the black solar cell ISN’T seen oviously in the video, only the Brain image thing, and the sound thing! (haven’t watched in a while)
Isn’t this a sound theroy, that whatever’s in the box, is powered by the sun? That would explane the big case it’s in!

May 20th, 2011 at 9:18 am

There was a reference in Futurama Episode S06E17 .. The Erwin Schrodinger, The cat and the box (filled with the cat, poison and cesium atom, and also lots of drugs)

Fry: Is the cat alive or death?
Schrodinger: It’s superposition of both states until you open it…

Are they just making fun of it, or they know something we don’t?

July 7th, 2011 at 11:15 pm

Marc, Schroedinger’s cat is a well known paradox
WITB merely referenced it in the material, as did Futurama… I highly doubt Futurma was referring to WITB ;)

July 8th, 2011 at 9:57 am

I don’t know if anyone found this yet..But in the Daybroke video at roughly 2:49 by the truck to the right hand side, you can see the word Palindrome. Which means a word can be read both forward and backward…such as TimSmit.

July 12th, 2011 at 10:25 pm
JE and Schnapps

To Bart!
we took the page and noticed when you move your cursor over the box it flashes red and some letters in the credits are covered up with “?’ we noticed someone found this too but only got the letters for the uncovered letters, however the letters covered up by the ‘?’ reads. “OTION nts ST WHAT IS IN THE BOX
SM S TH IS EEU S dito MS c ec MIT T
dition R TER EL U OOS d AR” I think the cipher to use in this case is the Vigenère cipher

July 31st, 2011 at 10:19 pm

i tried to write down the four chars below image ind here what i get (i dont know if its all and what order are they realy in)

maybe it have something to do with the red question marks when you point your mouse on the image

August 23rd, 2011 at 9:33 am

Haven’t seen a picture or information about this but its also possible I didn’t look hard enough. Figured i would post this anyways just in case i found something.

Seems when you go back to the main site http://www.whatsinthebox.nl/

and click on the upper quadrant of the circle you get forwarded to the video. now next to the options near the full screen button it will have a button labled babel. that will bring you to this site.

seems to be lots of fun stuff there.

October 19th, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Click on terms of use on the Hanso site.

You get an error Query Variable ppLink not found

then this brings you to

when logging in into a page enter 59462 (login from the phone) for login ID.

You can request a password reset which will send it to Martha@live.com

or a Security question of “name of Best Childhood Friend?”

since it is @live.com it leads me to suspect that it has something to do with Hanso foundations life extension project

You can possibly password reset that and it will send it to an e-mail mh*****@qwest.net

I have not sent any password reset requests since if it is someones legitimate account I do not want to mess with it.

Might be something worth looking into.

October 19th, 2011 at 9:02 pm

The order to click dots on Babel Research site didn’t work for me, so I rechecked filenames for dots and came up with this sequence:

2 3 7 6 1 8 4 9 5

and it worked!
So either the order in the article is wrong or something changed since then.

PS Thanks a lot for your article.

has the box been opened?
i’m toltally freaking out with this

February 6th, 2012 at 11:41 am

I know a lot of people aren’t looking, but in the video about the phone book is a hidden message.
And I think that if you look closely there will be more cleus on that very site: Timsmit.info

March 30th, 2012 at 9:50 am

This page is linked to the Babel Research Page. I have a feeling that there may be something here. So everyone Have at it!

-Tornadoes and you video, near the end there is a tank labeled Benthic Petroleum. Could be an Easter egg however it seems out of place seeing that kind of equipment should be found on oil rigs or under the ocean. There is also a facebook page for it with a handful of pictures. Could also be nothing but might be worth a look.

April 11th, 2012 at 12:40 am

On the http://www.timsmit.info/ site find the link to video “The Phone Book Myth” and towards the end (I did not see how to show time codes) right after they show the subtitle “Yes indeed.” the video goes black and a red diamond with a red question mark flicker on the screen with the text “www.WHATSINTHEBOX.nl” underneath. The video goes right back into the story.

Then a little later as they are wrapping their explanation, the video goes to a black screen with a repeating high pitch grating noise and the red letters at top:

“CAVIStreamSynth: System exception – Access Violation at 0x27df7b1, writing to 0×0″

The video comes to an end after about 27 seconds of the noise / black screen.

There is Something new on the website whatsinthebox.nl

May 5th, 2012 at 7:26 am

I’ve just noticed that whatsinthebox.nl and http://www.babel-research.eu are showing the same strange information, there’s new (I hope so) logo of Babel Research and something under it but I can’t read. Number of article and paragraph excluding 22 are just inverted ( and, it would be palindrome too if 8 will take 1′s place. It looks we’re waiting for 2.15.24 fole to be done. Besides that Hanso Foundation’s site is down. I hope that’s something new. Sorry for my bad english but I’m still learning.

May 6th, 2012 at 10:21 am

Alphanumerically, = REDIV, = IDER (REDIVIDER) and 2.15.24 = BOX

May 7th, 2012 at 9:53 am

Not that it’s of much use, but I believe the subtext under the babel research logo on the new site says.

May 18th, 2012 at 10:22 am

By the way, the image used on the updated sites is named “incursion.jpg”, you can see it with the source code.
I don’t know if it can help though.

Update on the error message?

Seems to be a stop error.

August 7th, 2012 at 9:21 pm

The new site design has just been brought to my attention as a result of a Team Fortress 2 update that also brought my attention to two items, “What’s in the Sandvich Box?” and “What’s in the Companion Square Box?”.

Now you probably already know that the Sandvich is another item in TF2 and the Companion [Cube] is an object in the game Portal (By the same developers), and items like this arn’t uncommon, but the name “What’s in the X box?” just sort of stood out to me.

Oh, these items were added on July 10th, well after the new site was discovered on May 5th.

September 23rd, 2012 at 11:06 am

guys!!! i have somthing for all of you, tim smit aparently is alive lol but is working in something called THE GUARDIAN

i don’t know if that will continue the story of WITB

News on the name of the file… cold this be something a bit more obvious:

in·cur·sion   [in-kur-zhuhn, -shuhn]
a hostile entrance into or invasion of a place or territory, especially a sudden one; raid: The bandits made brief incursions on the village.

Could this mean that Babel did something, and managed to hack the site down?

November 17th, 2012 at 2:08 pm

Hey guys!
Haven’t looked forward to this since a while… So, today I entered this website, didn’t find anything interesting and started looking by myself. When I got tired (lol), i proceeded to search “whatsinthebox” in google. This website is what i found (apart from the others): http://whatsinthebox.me/
It’s a band’s web, nothing special. After looking for a while i saw this: http://whatsinthebox.me/question%20mark.swf Does this look familiar to you?
After that, I didnt find anything until I started clicking every pic on the page, when I found that, if you click this image: http://whatsinthebox.me/images/ob-ufo.jpg , it redirects you to a “private party” page , to which you are invited. Didn’t find anything in the font codes after that, just some other bands webs (casually, one of those two bands web has the same style than Whatsinthebox.me). Hope this is useful or has something to do with all this research… I don’t know if its worth something tough.

December 9th, 2012 at 2:10 pm

@Omarlic: the second, the third and the 4th words under the new logo are

January 13th, 2013 at 12:14 pm

It was in a old lock and key box, the box was won over the internet, the box was shipped, then received, after which he opened it to a deck of cards box, after opening it he received $120, and a card labeled 4 of spades.

June 27th, 2013 at 11:37 pm

So now everytime you enter to whatsinthebox.nl it says some warning that it wont continue or something, does anybody knows what happened ? was the box opened ?

October 4th, 2013 at 5:22 pm

As of today, October 24th 2013, nothing else seems to be new. I simply wanted to place a google point for searches here. Let’s hope this ARG continues in the future.

October 24th, 2013 at 8:07 pm

check this again.. uploaded!!!

January 27th, 2014 at 5:30 pm

Did you find this picture?
The website is down, but some links is working.

April 22nd, 2015 at 1:53 am

The Babel Research website ( http://www.babel-research.eu/ ) has seem to turned into a Danish Converse website. The URL didn’t change, but all of its contents have. Strange. Is this project dead?

August 6th, 2015 at 11:51 am

Long time ago but was reminded of this because of this new “mystery-movie”: “… 01101101 01110101 01100101 01110010 01110100 01100101″

Anyway; because of this I was looking around to see if I could find anything new about WITB and noticed two things I haven’t seen on the net before:

1. Noticed “box” on the wall in the background; left of the guy shaving @ 3:01 and onwards in this clip Tim did the visual effects of:

2. There is this newspaper in another clip he did the visual effects of @0:11:

Headline says: “diplomacy fails”
Another headline reads: “First detonation near Welzenlake; second hits palindrome”

Again the “palindrome” that’s also on his homepage now timsmit.info: “ad limper on” together with some strings looking like dates. Not sure if the second point is related to WITB, but the “palindrome” got me thinking.

Also, the ring looks somewhat like a circuitboard I noticed.
